Fuel Gauge 5 Years, 10 Months ago
I need someone with more smarts than me to help me out. I removed my fuel tank to relocate the fuel pump. I unplugged the instrument cluster from the harness so it wouldn't have to dangle on the wires. After reassembling the thing, and yes, I was dazzled the clean look of the left side of the engine, my fuel gauge will not indicate accurately. It never shows more than 3/4 full when topped off, and I can ride til the cows come home with the gauge on "E" and the refuel light glowing. I tried leaving the battery unhooked overnight to no avail. I also removed and examined the fuel sending unit, it looks OK and has variable resistance according to my ohmmeter. I also disassembled the instrument cluster to see if there was any way to reset or adjust the gauge. I know I can use the odometer to figure out when to refuel, but I like things to work properly. Anyone have any ideas? Just what is the range of resistance of the sending unit? My crappy XV1600 manual on CD is no help. . There...see...I'm sad. XV1600 wizards please help.
Thanks, Curt

Curt,

Fuel sender resistance:

Full position of the float ...... 11 - 13 ohms at 68 F
Empty position of the float ..... 140 - 143 ohms at 68 F

Tester positive probe goes to green
Tester negetive probe goes to black/blue

After running my bike well past the reserve I also had problems
with my gauge not reading correctly.I fueled early one time and
noticed it was reading better.Did it again and the problem seemes
to have now corrected it self.Don`t know if this will help you
but it`s worth a try.(When I say early I mean at 1/4 or 1/3 of a
tank near empty mark)

Thanks for the info Doc. I find it strange that the problem started after I unplugged the instrument cluster and plugged it back in. Anyway, I'm going to pull the sender and test it. Guess I'll have to take it inside though, it's about 113 Deg. outside and 120 Deg. in my garage this time of year...almost too hot to ride.

An Update to those that might care. I finally "fixed" my fuel gauge problem by running the bike out of gas, riding to the gas station on reserve, and filling up. Works fine now. Don't know why. If you have an inaccurate gas gauge, give it a try.
