float settings 2 Years, 4 Months ago
am going to remove the fuel pump and install the larger needle and seat. I have read the entire procedure, even went to mr tidys float adjustment page but all i see there is how to check it not adjust it. I used to rebuild automotive carbs and float level was set with air horn off and carb empty. Are there instructions on this site that show how to adjust the float. Mr tidys explanation just didnt seem to have enough info for me

You bend the tang to move the float up or down. Or isn' that what you meant?

Unfortunately there is no 'dry' setting; you have to do it 'wet' ... but you can do it off the bike.

Once you have it assembled but still off the bike, stick it in a vice and level it, then follow the process in the manual.

I find it's easier to do the bench setting rather than putting it on and taking it off the bike multiple times. You can change the float leve with the carb on the bike but I find it a pain.

Just found this dry-fit-on-the-bike process courtesy of Metricman .... Make sure bike is on the jack and level when you test with hose; take off the float bowl;with a small allen wrench or similar tool push up on the metal float tab just under the the float plunger: while your are pushing up pull both the floats downward toward the ground equally. This will force the metal float tab to bend at the right spot. Test before putting the float bowl back on like this. Push up very lightly just hard enough to seat the plunger: at that point the floats need to be parallel or just slightly pointing downward to the ground in relationship to the mating surface of the float bowl and carb. Put the float bowl back on and hose test.

Post edited by: DocShadow, at: 2006/08/25 08:09

Here's the link to the service manuals. Should tell you where you need to be.

Re:float settings 2 Years, 4 Months ago
Went to the service manual and directions are as follows. (A) stand motorcycle on level surface ( Place motorcycle on suitable stand to ensure the motorcycle is standing straight up. (C) ibstall the fuel level gauge onto the fuel drain pipe (D)loosen the fuel drain bolt (E) measure the fuel level. so here are my questions, it says nothing about starting the bike , so when i go to check the float level the bowl will be full till i open the drain then just like a water level the fluid will seek its own level? and thats the level the float should be at? should ihave the ignition on if im doing it on the bike? if i do it on a work bench once i fill the bowl should i have a gravity feed system set up to make sure the float bowl is completely full? hope this isnt a to confusing question just want to make sure i get it right. I have worked on car carbs before but they seem very diffrent from bike carbs

That's correct. If the hose is lower than the bowl you would drain all the fluid out.

and thats the level the float should be at?

The level in the clear tube will be the level of the gas inside the float bowl.

should ihave the ignition on if im doing it on the bike?

I've seen that being recommended but I don't understand why normally that would be required. Unless you have a leak somewhere or the bike has been standing for a long time the bowl should be full. You could turn the key on just to get the pump to run and fill up the bowl, just in case.

if i do it on a work bench once i fill the bowl should i have a gravity feed system set up to make sure the float bowl is completely full?

Yes. Just hook up anything that contains a bit of gas in it such as a slong piece of hose or a container (soda pop bottle upside down with a hose through the cap) to the gas inlet

Re:float settings 2 Years, 4 Months ago
i guess what i was asking but didnt do a good job of is, is if the bike is off and bowl is full when you attach the tube and open the drain then the bowl is not completely full because some of the fuel in the bowl is now in the tube. is that correct or do i have to top off the bowl ? sorry to be a P.I.T.A but want to make sure i do this correctly and afetr my results i could do a step by step write up thanks again $teve Wick 2005 B+W Road Star

Steve,

I guess we both didn't get our point across.

On the bench ... you are correct, you need to keep the float bowl full. To the gas inlet on the carb, hook up anything that contains a bit of gas in it such as as a piece of fuel hose (about 6&quot or a container (soda pop bottle upside down with a hose through the cap) to the gas inlet.
