Speed Gobbles some Gas........ 7 Months, 3 Weeks ago
|
|
So, Yesterday I made a 480 mile round trip to Houston from Waxahachie to see my Father-In-Law and help mom-in-law learn her way around MD Anderson Cancer Center, since they will be there for a while. Anyway, I filled the tank 4 miles from the house. I hit 287 doing about 70, and everyone who was out at 6am was blowing my doors off. By the time I got going south on I-45, I tached on up to run between 80 and 85, since the bike likes that speed. I hammered that for 153 miles, then, reserve sputter. I rolled on for about 20 miles and stopped for fuel. Since I hit reserve so fast, I wondered how bad my high-speed mileage was. 38.2MPG! That's the worst mileage I've gotten on any cruiser, except a Valkyrie Interstate (28-32 average on a Valkie) The next tankfull, I spanked my right hand and tried to keep the throttle locked down between 70-72 MPH. 202 miles to sputter!!! Returned 47 MPG on second stint. I guess that old drag formula is preetty accurate.
Just thought I would share this. All miles were highway miles, with very little change in throttle position. Bike is an 03 Silverado LE with V&H longshots, stock filter/airbox, and Dynojet jet kit.

Sorry to hear about your FIL and wish him a speedy recovery. My 05 behaves similarly...take it easy 50+ on the highway...spank it and it drops...in my case to about 42 on a trip but still way down!
Regards, Ted

Since I changed to the V/H Longshots and BAK, rejetted carb ect, around town I get about 41 mpg. I tend to ride with a heavy hand unless wife is behind me on her bike ."Honest honey.. I don't know why the back tire needs replacing already .

since i rejetted mine last week, I havent been able to get a good mpg reading, my pipes are louder and it is a little quicker off the line now, so I have been into the throttle a lil to much, but i will be recording it on my trip to see what it is

So, it's not only 7-Eleven that has the market on the "Big-Gulp"! Coincidentally the fill cap on a gas can is about 40mm (the same size of the Mik carb...) at 85mph just open the cap of a five gallon gas can and pour into the cylinders! But, at least the Star give you more satifaction per mile...

Mines the same way. Stay in the 70 to 75 range and can get 47,48 mpg. Open her up and she drinks the gas. Still fun though

Ditto for me as well... although my stock bike gets in the 50's consistantly when I lay off the throttle.
As for my car, same thing! I went to Columbus Ohio over the weekend and put on 560 miles using 10.966 gallons of fuel... 51 mpg... mostly interstate at 70 mph. The car... my wonderful VW Jetta TDi... a turbo diesel.
What amazes me is that the media touts the hybrids but never mentions diesels like mine.

That's because to an enviro weenie, a diesel is the automotive equivilant of a coal fired powerplant!

Most of my riding is highway. To help with the fuel issue, I've been looking for a larger front pulley but haven't been able to locate one. Is this even an option for the Road Star? I'm not much into taking of the line like a bullet so the smaller pulley doesn't do me any good. Maybe there's another option out there???
