The beat 5 Years, 8 Months ago
Love the beat of the v-twin at idle.. but why does it skip along then steady out then skip along?? I know all about the odd firing and the potato potato firing
of the V-twin but if the thing is just sitting there what makes it skip then go steady for a few beats then skip For you DOC

Post edited by: Pop Rivet, at: 2006/09/02 15:23

Musky I meant Doc might have an idea but your thoughts are welcome
and Dave even if you turn down the idle you will still get the stumbling beat as I call it .. characteristic of the single pin crank and the firing sequence but why is the potato potato not a steady off beat sounds like different offbeats while RPM stays exactly the same on the tach it IS very normal for this V-twin
It is beautiful sounding but thought provoking
especially since Ive got nothing better to do than listen to my idle in the garage
while the remnants of hurricane Ernesto pours away outside.

I live in Ontario and the remnants of Ernesto are right above us today.

Post edited by: Pop Rivet, at: 2006/09/03 00:45

It' been raining in Ottawa since Saturday evening but most of it has passed and it' letting up now.

Mine did that and it bugged me so I turned the idle up. I don't have a tach but I don't think I'm at the recommended 900 RPM. But the lope is almost not there either. My thoughts are that if we had a old fashioned normal carb on there we wouldn't have this issue. Not based on anything scientific.

Yes maybe the single carb-- cause the ignition firing should keep it pop.pop.....pop.pop.....pop.pop.... but what im hearing is pop.pop.....pop.pop...pop.popopop.pop.pop.pop....pop.pop....pop.pop...
My tach tells me im idleing is 900-1000 rpm once the choke is off

And I am in Kingston Ont ..but my son is in Ottawa we all got poured on

Post edited by: Pop Rivet, at: 2006/09/03 12:26

Well why didn't you say that the first time

OK, hows this for a theory. Heavy parts in there. Big pistons and such. At an idle it just doesn't keep up the momentum to have things turning over smoothy so it stumbles a little till it catches back up.
