thanks...and yep i'm there! reconnected BA tonight. i'm sure i have 2/3 - 3/4 tank. gauge still reads 1/2. the manuals Musky provided give me the ohm specs, so... maybe sun or mon i'll pull it. i have pipes, jets, and filter somewhere in the mail. my logic circuit says do it all when i start the upgrades, and my fun meter is on the low side - need to ride.

About a month ago, my fuel gauge would show empty and the light would blink in 8 blink sequences. After the fuel went down a bit, the guage would start working and the light would go out. Now it seems like the guage rarely works anymore and the light is now on most of the time and is now steady. Based upon these symptoms, do you think its a bad sender unit?

TIA!

Definitely sending unit, If you just get radical reading all the time...disconnect. When it does what yours is doing, new sending unit. You'll notice everytime you fuel up,....it takes longer for it to come back up. Until it quits working at all.

has anyone gotten long term repair by exercising the sending unit, or would i just be better off buying new one and be done with it?

The only problem I'm having with my gauge is it reads empty too early, but that's because I run out of fuel.

I've had two sender units go bad, the first around 40k the second at 73k. Hadn't heard of anybody else having this problem until now.

ok, Looks like I've got the same problem with my "empty gas indicator" and the blinking '8' times light. I went to the Yamaha 'Self-Diagnosis' section 7 of the Service Manual - which pretty much gives you the step by step procedures of what to do.
1st thing: check the LED Light (most of ours sounds like it is working correctly) So unplugging the battery for a day or two; doesn't do anything; except for saving the battery.

2nd Check the Fuel sender resistance (the bubble)...

3rd: Or it could be a wire harness. (A Short)..

I don't have the procedure for checking "the bubble". Mind cluing me in? My indicater went south back around Easter when my battery died.

Do you have the service manual? Cause it does have a nice little picture there.
For the Fuel Sender:
Disconnect the fuel sender coupler from the wire harness.
Dreain the fuel from the fuel tank and remove the fuel sender from the fuel tank.
Connect the pecket tester (ohmx10) to the fuel sender coupler.
TESTER POSITIVE PROBE --> Green (1)
TESTER NEGATIVE PROBE --> Black/Blue (2)

Measure the fuel sender resistance.
FUEL SENDER RESISTANCE
FULL POSITION OF THE FLOAT (UP) (A) 11 ~ 13 OHM AT 20 C (68F)
EMPTY POSITION OF THE FLOAT (DOWN) ( 140 ~ 143 OHM AT 20 C (68F)

if NO (Replace Fuel Sender).

if YES Check the Wire Harness for continuity.
