Changing the Oil 5 Years, 8 Months ago
Getting to be a pro at changing the oil finally. Saving a ton of bucks by not going to the dealer too. All went smooth, except for one small thing. I do remember reading here before where others could not get the "specified book amount" in. I can fit 5 qts in not 5.3. After checking the dipstick it is at the very top of the hash marks. Almost overfilled it, but not quite.

Is this something to be concerned about? I would think not since the dipstick shows it full. But just wondering is this is common or does it have anything to do with the fact that I am not using a stock yammie filter.

Also recently installed my new pipes, Samson Shogun slashers. OMG they are awesome. Not going to touch the new BAK and AIS removal. Just beyond my comfort zone. Am trying to get a friend that has more experience to help with that.

thanks to everyone for their help.

If you drained your oil through the 2 drain plugs and changed the filter you will still have about a quart left in your motor. You should only be putting back 4.3 qts at the most. The Dry volume of the R* is 5.3 quarts.

Post edited by: Musky, at: 2006/09/04 20:37

hey clifdog:

i just wanted to put in my two cents worth.

i wouldnt put the oil level any higher than 1" way up on the hatch marks on the dip stick with the stick screwed all the way in.

yamaha told my wonderfull dealer that they screwed up on the 1700's dip stick and and made it to short witch makes the oil level to high and the oil level shouldnt be above 1" on the dip stick all the way screwed in.

ive been running mine at 1/4" on the hatch marks.

you can take it with a grain of salt if you want to, but thats what i started doing 2500 miles ago.

Post edited by: dozer, at: 2006/09/04 20:09

After the initial 600 mile break in, how often do you need to change your oil? Should you use any certain type of oil?

Blessings,

CLIFDOG, the book calls for 4.33 US qts of oil, don't no where you heard 5.3.
I change my oil every 1200-1500 miles, filter every other change. It's a little excesive but for the price it's quite the peace of mind. For 35 years now I have used Valvoline. In the R* 10-40 for winter, 20-50 for summer. I just changed and went to Valvoline synthetic. Don't notice any difference but all my research tells me it's best in the long run. It's supposed to hold up longer so I was thinking of leaving it in for around 2500.
I have never checked the oil dipstick!! I put 4.3 qts in I expect there to be 4.3 qts in there! Unless I see a large puddle underneath it I don't worry to much.

I am in close with the local shop manager. He has had several conversations with the factory. They are saying not to go to the 4.3 and just do 4.0 because the oil flows from the tank into the back cylinder and will inadate the back cylinder.

welcome to the forum spanky.

I stopped 4 oz short of 4 qt on my change to synthetic and it seems just fine.

Musky--

Is that with filter change and draining both plugs? Mine's an '04, so according to the info from Dozer's dealer, I guess that means my dipstick is too short. Man...that's almost embarrassing to say...

Thanks,

Yup. I measured the drained oil and I filled up a gallon jug and there was some left over (including draining the filter) so it must be pretty close to 4.3 you get out on a normal change.

I guess that means my dipstick is too short.

Can't help ya there

You hear all sorts of stuff from dealers. It might be true and it might not. Bottom line is if you drain 4.3 out and you don't put more than that back in you shouldn't be overfull. And if you only put 4 qt back in your not going to hurt the motor. I have to say that I've never spent much time checking the oil on my bikes. If it isn't leaking out or burning up then it's in the motor and I'm in good shape. but I change my oil at about 3500. If you like to push it to 8 or 10 grand it might be a different story. That's just my opinion and if someone else does it and blows up don't call me.

Only have 4,400 miles on the bike, and I have no idea what was (is) in it when I got it, dino or synth. Bought a gallon jug of Texaco synth 20/50 (no friction modifiers ala wet clutch) and gonna put that in...when I get a chance. Dammit, why does life have to get in the way of tinkering???

What about gear oil in the transfer case? Anyone have any reccommendations on brand/weight/change frequency?
