What about gear oil in the transfer case? Anyone have any reccommendations on brand/weight/change frequency?
Mobile 1 75/90 and Amsoil 75/90 are both supposed to work fine. I think the book calls for a change at 16,000 and it's something like a pint.

I use Mobil 15-50 red cap as well. I heard from my local oil change shop (minute-lube) that the new 5-50 silver cap is the next generation. The reason for it is better flow on cold starts.

I was reading that 15W50 is a high performance oil that is recommend for towing and high speeds like Nascar. Why put such a "high grade" oil in the R*? How often do you need to change it then? Does putting too good of an oil into the R* have negative effects like putting in too high of an octane gasoline?
Blessings!

Pop--
I saw the Mobil V-Twin oil at Wal Mart, but the $7.99 per quart price scared me, especially when I couldn't find much difference in specs and the Texaco is $15/gallon, also at Wally World, and specifically says it has no friction modifiers. Doc said the stuff I got he had tried, but it was kinda "noisy". I may give the Mobil a try on the next change, though...
Thanks to everyone for the insights!

My boss has something like 11 bikes, including 2 Hardy Dealersums, a Hayabusa, and a 1980-something KZ-1000 with over 125,000 mies on it, all running synth forever, and I saw the pistons & all when he had it pulled apart...damn things almost looked new! I'm sold on synth all the way. Next car (Jeep Liberty) will get nothing but!

You'll find if you ask most riders, me included, that with synthetic oil the bike seems to run quieter.
Although I know guys who do, I don't extend my riding between oil changes. I run about 4 k miles when I change it out.
The only issue with any oil is choosing one that has no friction modifiers. Oil companies are adding friction modifiers to most automobile oils. The use of these oil blends is highly discouraged due to clutch slippage.
Generally these blends can be identified by the words "Energy Conserving" in the API label.
