Starter kicking out on shut down 6 Months ago
After a ride and when I turn the bike off, it sounds as if the starter is engaging or disengaging. Kind of sounds like it is being kicked out or spun off of something. Is the roadstar like a car in that is has the gear that engages and disengages the starter gear? It almost sounds as if the gear is staying out and when it turns off it is spinning loose. Bike only has 750 miles on it and it is an 07 Roadstar.

the starter is not a bendix type starter..no gear to be stickin in and out to engage another gear ...it is a constant mesh sprag starter clutch..and that is what you are hearing spinnin backwards on shut down... Very normal...

The starter is never disengaged! In the starter drive there is a "clutch". This clutch is a ratchet-like mechanism; the starter turns the engine but the engine doesn't turn the starter. Sometimes when you shut down a piston that didn't quite go over the top bounces back from a compression stroke. It is this momentaty backwards motion that makes the starter clutch give the starter a little spin. This is normal.

Thanks everyone. Good to know it is normal. I just upgraded to a Road Star from a 1100 VStar Custom. Bike is very different that the VStar in many ways and just trying to get to know the bike better.

I was wondering the same thing. only happens on occasion and from what I can tell no rhyme or reason. Looks like Clifford gave a good explanation.
