#90397 jkreylin (User) Fresh Boarder Posts: 19 Starter kicking out on shut down 7 Months, 1 Week ago   After a ride and when I turn the bike off, it sounds as if the starter is engaging or disengaging. Kind of sounds like it is being kicked out or spun off of something. Is the roadstar like a car in that is has the gear that engages and disengages the starter gear? It almost sounds as if the gear is staying out and when it turns off it is spinning loose. In the starter drive there is a "clutch". This clutch is a ratchet-like mechanism; the starter turns the engine but the engine doesn't turn the starter. Sometimes when you shut down a piston that didn't quite go over the top bounces back from a compression stroke. It is this momentaty backwards motion that makes the starter clutch give the starter a little spin. This is normal. Good to know it is normal. I just upgraded to a Road Star from a 1100 VStar Custom.
