Can i get into first gear stationary.. no :) 3 Years, 11 Months ago
Hi All,
I would value your opinions on what has just started happening to my Roadstar 1600 2001, 8500 miles

Its very hard..near impossible to get the bike into first gear from N at stop, and sometimes even going to 2nd from N at stop. This has only just started happening, up to now no issues..smooth as silk.

Any thoughts would be helpful, thanks, Andy

PS its ok if i change down while moving.... just look a bit of a pill rocking the bike at traffic lights trying to get it out of third
Im just thankful it has so much torque

I can't help much but here's a link http://www.paulmilner.com/yamaha/handbuch/handbuch.htm#roadstar
that may give you an idea. Transmissions are on pages 342 to 347. You need Adobe Acrobat to open it. The individual links are down loadable and you can print out what you need and go for it.

Has your bike had the tranny recall done on it? If not this might be a good time to do it.

I had a bike like that once, and I would just let the clutch out just until it started to grab and then I could change gears at a stop.

I was having issues with my tranny last year. Mine was with 5th gear while riding though, but a similar feeling, it didn't want to go in. Mine ended up with 5th gear not working period. The cause, the 3 locking tabs that engage 5th gear in the tranny sheared clean off. Mine had the recall already done, but this particular gear wasn't part of it. If memory serves right, the recall wouldn't affect the gears with your particular issue either.

My problem was solved with a complete teardown and near complete rebuild of the motor & tranny, which is necessary for any transmission work on the R*. Let's hope your problem isn't as deep as mine was. If you haven't had the recall done on it, this would be a perfect time to get it done and have your issue addressed.

If you want to tell if the dealer has already done your recall, check the VIN on the headstock, it should have a punch mark above it indicating the recall has been done. If no punch, check into getting the recall done.

Check the simple stuff first. Is your clutch properly adjusted. Sometimes you can be a little out on the adjustment and the clutch will not fully disengage making it difficult to shift gears when at a stop.

Call a dealer or Yami customer servive and give them your VIN. They can tell you for sure if the recall has been done.

Something is definately not right, but why is anybody down shifting at a stopped position?

When you come to a stop, you should already be in first gear.

My 2 cents!

Agree with Mr Cancilla, it is best to down shift while the scoot is moving. Getting to shift down when standing still is not easy as the gears are not turning and they tend to just not want to engage the momentum of the turning gears helps.
