Overnight Problem? 5 Years, 8 Months ago
|
|
Not sure what is up but I'm getting frantic as I have reservations in Carson City for Thunder in the Comstock (Virginia City) and my Bike refuses to run correctly! Here's the rundown: Last weekend I changed the oil, went to 20W40 Royal Purple, and added a Pro One Oil cooler. Took the bike for a ride after and all was fine. Checked oil level and it was at the midway point in the hash-marks. I fueled up and parked it for the evening. The next morning I took off and got about one mile from the house and the bike was missing terribly! Lot's of black smoke! Pulled the plugs this a.m. and carboned badly. Tried adjusting pms, etc and still black smoke and the bike loads up at idle. I'm at a loss. And overnight? Just a coincidence?
All help is appreciated!
Thanks,
Donald

Can't see any way it would be the oil. If it was fine the night before you filled up and ran bad after then I would guess you got bad gas. Might be water in the gas. You could try tossing a can heat in the tank. Or you could drain the tank, get a couple bucks worth of gas (from a different station) and see what happens.

A stuck choke plate or dirty air filter or carburetor will cause black smoke as well......Coug

Just tried emptying the gas and put new in..... Same thing. I did notice that when I pull out the choke it pops back in like it's already engaged.....
I guess next I'll pull the carb and clean, check floats, and check choke....

Seems to me if the choke was stuck on it would push the cable out. But I could be wrong. Try and tighten the round rubber grommet right behind the choke knob. Not the plastic nut behind the mount. It turns just like a nut. The rubber grommet has a spring and ball inside that gives you your clicks when you pull the choke out. The ball pops into dentents. If you cable slides right back in I would say the grommet is loose. I'm not saying this will fix your problem but the cable shouldn't move that easy. I just recently found out the grommet was loose so my choke wasn't going all the way off when I had the knob pushed up tight against it. I was running with the choke on the first click all the time. Tightened up the grommet and problem solved.

I think it's probably a coincidence.
You may have been running rich for some time and the bike has now been fouled.
Try spraying some Marvel Mystery Oil or fuel injector or carb cleaner lightly through the carb and see what comes out.
What are your speces on your bike.
Year ?
Mods ?
Jetting ?
If the choke sticks in the carb, it sticks in the open postion and so would not pull the knob back in but you may also have some dirt in the choke plunger seat.
