04 RS, BAK w/raincoat, lower wind deflectors
PROBLEM:
When it rains, and not much at all, I am sucking water into the carb and the bike will barely run (as you could imagine). I ride with at least three other RS with this setup and many more bikes with the same kit. NONE of them will "water up" during a ride but I do.
WHAT I'VE CHECKED:
Looked at all the sealing points on the carb. They look good and there is no sign of air leak (backfire, etc.)
I added a bit more oil to the K&N filter.
I replaced the raincoat but one guy doesn't even use one it his runs fine.
Anyone have a clue or helpful comment. Really at a loss here. |

I have the K&N air kit and its similar to BAK, and have no problems with rain. Make sure the filter is oiled, I know that too much oil leaves a mess on the pipes but not enough will allow the water to enter.
I have been in down pours with no problem. But I over oil the filter and after it sits wipe off the drips every so often.
The spray can works best for not putting too much on but the bottle holds more, and take a pump spray top and should put a light coat turning the filter red |

Thanks, I'm not worried about the messy pipes. I'll give it shot and put some more on. Its raining here today so... maybe a test.

Tamaule , I Never used the rain coat on mine and had zero issues with rain. Did , however , carry disposable shower caps on road trips so if in the evening it was still raining I'd cover it. Tried riding in the rain without the coat to see if there is any difference? BB  |

Have you cleaned and oiled the filter or just added oil? I haven't had any issues with mine.

To answer many of you at once:
Yes, cleaned and recharged the filter.
No, its not an electrical problem - dry gas fixes it... either that or dry gas is some amazing shit.
I'm starting to think I don't have enough oil on it. It seems to me after having all this refresh my memory that I did not have the issue with the "new" filter - it was only after the recharge that it happens.

Ok, one last question about this. I have forward mounted controls and neither of the other bikes I run with have them. They both run floorboards. This is the only other difference. Any heard of this being a problem? Water coming off the road?

Run the rain coat on it all the time. I do. Doesn't hurt a thing. And I think it looks better than the red filter too.  |

You might have way too much oil on your filter when you recharge it. When I had my Roadie, and when I recharged my filter for the first time, my bike would not want to start or run very good at all. I had oil all over my pipes. I latere found out on this sight that you don't need a whole lot of oil on your filter. Just enough to turn it a light red color. If you overcharge your filter, basically what you are doing is suffocating your motor. I have never ran my raincoat on my BAK and never had a problem in the rain. To sum it up....just put a light even coat of oil on your filter, and if you want go ahead and use your raincoat. Good luck man. You might want to check your plugs too....they might be pretty carboned up. |
