|
|
A friend of mine with a road king bought a new filter that advertises an cleanable stainless steel mesh oil filter with less pressure drop and even claims an HP increase. It is made by K & P engineering. It is pricey but it is also chrome. Has anyone heard of this? I looke d at their website and they do make a model for roadstar. their website is www.kandpengineering.com

I could see coughing up the $$ for this filter. After about 10 oil changes it's paid for and from then on you're actually making money on the darn thing. Since I have no intentions of trading my girl in I don't really see a downside to this.
Besides, if it's good enough for Doc's beautiful custom ride, it's bound to be good enough for my plain jane road humper.

i found this article on oil filters about 3 months ago when i was looking for alternatives to stealership prices. it's pretty interesting.
http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/Filters.html
remember this is just one mans' opinion. but oil is the life blood of our engines, so i certainly would hope ANY good info gets passed around to us all to help avoid disaster.

I just bought one from Scott's http://www.scottsperformance.com/
I haven't installed it yet but it is very well made and every bit as nice as advertised, even came with it own removal tool. I think it's worth the money if you plan to keep your bike for a long time, and if you are like me and change oil often, it will pay for itself in about two years.

Doesnt say anything good about the stainless filter....
But then he might have shares in purolator ...
And raised suspicion about the anti-drain-back valve on the K&N ...

right, like I said take it w/ a grain of salt. I look at his recommendations objectively.
I think the biggest thing i took from the article is the micron size. since most tolerances in an engine are in the 1000's, this makes the most sense. i kinda use it as a guideline/reference point when switching filter brands/types.
still comes down to this...go w/ what works. some of these guys have been running their various filters for a long time....
