Bad ring?

Metal shavings stuck in ring?

Those bores should be as smooth as a baby's bum.

Thanks for everyone's reply.

I bought the bike for $2k, figured even if I parted the bike in parts it should still be worth that much.

The swirl marks are all the way around the cylinder, they do look horrible. But the cylinder feels very smooth when I ran my finger on them. The PO assured me that he didn't do anything like that, but I guess since he bought it used there is no way to tell for sure either.

The dealer checked the VIN and found no outstanding recall on this bike. So I assume everything that needed to be done was done on it.

I did try to start it and it wouldn't, then decided to take it apart. It didn't take long as everything looked easy to get to. I usualy would have done some diagnotic before I tear things apart when I work on cars, as they take a little more time to take apart. But figured, man this is a bike... and figured since an "authorized" dealer said it needs a top end...so..... LOL!

If it is indeed a bore issue, shouldn't the leak down reveal that? Instead of coming out of the intake?

Currently the motor is still in the bike I left the cylinder in. At this point should I remove it from the engine? I did see a lot of little debris stuck on the top of the piston ring area. Here are some pics.

For some reason I am limited to post pic at 150x150 size. So here is the links to the pictures of the debris I was referring to

quick simple test for valve seating.

take the heads, put the plugs in and tighten to the normal torque, turn the heads upside-down and fill the combustion chamber with paraffin and leave it overnight.

if there is a very slight seepage of paraffin in the ports, as in just a bit of misty type dampness, donīt worry about it. if the ports are actually wet with paraffin, check your valves for true and re-grind them.

but yet again, them bores are a mess, mate!

Maybe it would be cheaper to buy a motor from a wrecking yard and put it in? LOL!

Pull the piston out .... I suspect you have a broken ring.

I agree that the bores are a mess. they look like they were honed with a rat tail file..and there is an awful lot of crap that looks like sand in there as well. I think you need to re sleeve it.
Hey hedgehog, when you say paraffin, you mean like lamp oil or kerosene right..? here in the states we sometimes call wax that, and I'm just trying to avoid any confusion..

Just a useful bit of info on parts for rebuilding that motor of yours... there isn't any gasket kit available for the R*, at least when I was searching just a few months back. What I stumbled across was the recall kit (Yamaha part #: 90891-10117-00). This contains almost every gasket you'll need for a rebuild. Depending on what you all take off, there may be a few other gaskets you'll need as well. I found that this kit was cheaper than attempting to buy the gaskets all seperately, at least up in Canada. You can check the whole listing of parts out in the Recall PDF. The nice this is, you get a few other parts to replace while you're at it... I now have a tranny that's over 60% brand spankin new!

Unfortunately, I can't help out with the rest of your problems, I'm even more a newbie than you! I had buddies help me with my rebuild project. I'd be interested to hear what your carb settings are at when you pull it apart. I'm running a hypercharger as well, not the Pro series though. I'm still not dialed in right, but then... it seems no one really is with a hypercharger lol
