water trapped under the rear led stop light 5 Years, 8 Months ago
guys:

i found alot of water trapped under the rear led stop light after pressure washing it.

i dont know if anybody else has this problem or not, but i pressure wash my bike to clean it, always after its cool, i stay back a reasonable distance away from the paint job though.

i have always had water trickling down under the light for around two hours or so, i figured its just coming out from the seal area that had water injected into that area.

i decided to just nick the bottom of the seal and had around 1.5 oz. of water come out, i dont know if this common or not but u may want to pull up on the bottom of the seal the next time you wash your bike and make shur that no water is hiding under there or worse some of the moisture is staying and you get corrosion.

WHOA.. pressure washing is not a recommended procedure to clean ANY bike..
underneath maybe..A wash mitt.. gentle rinse and I have a Air force dryer... you guys ARE ASKING FOR PROBLEMS...

It is in your manual 7-1 "DO NOT USE HIGH-PRESSURE WASHERS OR STEAM-JET CLEANERS SINCE THEY CAUSE WATER SEEPAGE AND DETERIORATION IN THE FOLLOWING AREASEALS(OF WHEEL AND SWING-ARM BEARINGS,FORK AND BRAKES),ELECTIC COMPONENTS(COUPLERS,CONNECTORS,INSTRUMENTS,SWITCHES AND LIGHTS), BREATHER HOSES AND VENTS."

I too get water under the tail light, i do not use as pressure washer i just use a normal hosewith a spray nozzle. to get the water out i use an air compressor and blow gun. now i have found it gets trapped in two places. 1 under the tail light and 2 between the rubber gasket and the lens. i also have had water get trapped in and under the rubber gasket on the dash. i get that out the same way as the tailight, compressed air and a blow gun

Dad is that you? ....Dad?..... Whew! For a minute there I thought my Dad was still alive but it was just Pop Rivet being ...well Pop Rivet. Hey I've gotta admit I wanted to pressure wash mine too but I happened to have just read my owners manual. My legs went to sleep while I was reading it, man I've gotta get a cushioned seat for the reading room.

Know what? no big deal just use a fine mist to rinse. It's tempting to use the car wash as the time savings are fantastic. But then you don't get to spend an hour caressing your bike. People would look at you funny if you were just rubbing it but it's OK if you're washing it.

Well that explains a lot. I'll have to remember to bring water next time.

damn pop rivet:

after reading your statment i went and set in the corner for an hour for being bad.

i can tell ya right now that i put di-electric grease in all of the plugs that pop apart, behind all the fuses to.

each time i wash the bike i put bags around the end of both exhaust with rubberbands, then i stay around 3' away from the bike and the pressure washer dont hurt a thing.

now if you just spray off the bike with water from the hose and start wiping you cant get in all the groves "without thoughs little q-tips that is", not to mension the spokes, but you can cause swirling in the paint job, not a good thing.

i washed my old 650 night hawk the same way and in 5 years never had a single problem with that bike, i wish i could say that about this bike.

as soon as im done washing the bike i wipe it down with an old soft towel "dried in bounty drier cloths" that gets washed each time i wash the bike.

I just use crumpled up dry newspaper and wipe the dirt off without water so I don't have any electrical problems.

Seriously, I haven't had any problems with water in my lights. Or at least not that I've noticed.

I was out west this summer (wyoming) with a few buddys on a road trip, when one of the guys riding a R* had a signal light go out on a lightbar from yamaha. I'm the wrench for most of my riding buddys so I say swing in the autoparts store, grab an 1157 and I'll replace it. Long story short, there was so much water in that turnsignal that it rusted the bulb in place and being in water caused it to blow. . It was a pain to fix. Keep an eye on those lightbar turnsignals and head off trouble before it makes itself known.

Sorry guys...for reading you the bible. Youre gonna put me on the Cross??

Anyway.... weeping holes on the bottom of light fixtures sound like a good idea ...especially the front signal lights I think I,ll get down from the pulpit and find me a drill

Pressure washers are great around heavy equipment eh Dozer?? And it sounds like you know what yer doin....Ive cleaned my bikes... especially the Yamaha 500 Enduro ...with a pressure washer especially underneath but.. as you were.. I was carefull...

And Musky...you should always have water around you

Post edited by: Pop Rivet, at: 2006/09/12 02:57
