Continuing Education - Decompression Solenoid 6 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Time for another "Educate Earl" question:

I've seen several posts that mention a decompression solenoid and have seen chrome covers for them on the Internet as well.

What does the decompression solenoid do?

Releases the pressure in the cylinders so it's easier to start.

Does it hold the exhaust valves open a little until the starter gets wound up..

That's the first thing I read in the service manual, however coming from an "automotive" point of view it doesn't make any sense to me that releasing the compression makes it easier to start. I thought the more compression there is the easier to ignite the fuel mixture when it is cold. Unless the decompression is to make the starter easier to turn the motor during compression stage.

How is the firing order arranged in a v-twin? Do they both fire at the same time or at intervals?

It's releases the compression so it turns over easier. Find a bike with a kickstart that doesn't have a decomp on it. You'll understand.

yep, and you'll wish you never picked that fight

lots of atvs have manual decomp. levers, that way you don't break your arm when tryin to pull start it

I see you wanted the long answer.

From the service manual .....

The auto decompression mechanism occurs when the engine is started. When the engine is started, the decompression cam and pin raise the exhaust valve lifters, push the push rods, move the rocker arms, and lower the exhaust valves which compress the cylinder. When the cylinder is compressed, pressure is released immediately, resulting in smoother engine starting capabilities and smoother crankshaft revolutions.
