HELP, Lifter prob during recall 6 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Long story short;

I put my scoot in the shop 4 weeks ago for the recall. Supposedly, it was going to be done today. I just left the dealership and it is back in pieces. The tech says he put it back together yesterday evening and started it...... Only the back cylinder was running.

The front has more compression than the rear. He called the Yami tech line and they said if he left it out on the bench torn down that the lifters would have decompressed and gave him a couple things to try. He left it overnight with the valves up. (no difference) Now, he is probably going to pull the lifters out and put the back in dry ???????? That is what they told him to do. They said it will beat the band for a little bit until the get lubed. IF that doesn't work, he says he will have to order new lifters completely. Probably another week or more.

Any of you brilliant yami guys have any suggestions? By the way he said with 15K+ the inside of the motor was immaculate. He found absolutely no shavings or wear anywhere.

I have worked on small airplane engines for 40 years, and have only been working on motorcycles for 6 1/2 years. In that time I have never heard of a problem like yours! In airplanes they want the lifters dry when it is put together, and you collapse the spring to check clearance with the lifters flat. I have replaced lifters in HD's which come dry; if you reuse the factory pushrods they are solid so there is nothing to check; if you use adjustable aftermarket pushrods, then you take up all of the free play between the rocker and the lifter spring, then you lengthen the pushrod by 4 turns to put pressure on the lifters. For both the aircraft and Harley engines as soon as you start the enging and the oil pressure comes up the lifters fill up and everything is dandy.
I haven't had ocation to tear into a Roadstar engine for anything yet; so I have no experience with them. I must say; however, that your case sounds kind of strange!
I have never seen or heard of a lifter going flat sitting on the bench. They have to specifically be cleaned. When you start an engine with dry lifters they may clatter for a minit but it doesn't take long for them to fill up and everything is normal.

That's curious 'cause the official Yamaha process detailed in their official manual says that:

A valve lifter must be bled in the following cases.
• When installing a new valve lifter
• When the valve lifter leaks oil

I followed the official process detailed in the manual, i.e., pumped them up with kerosene, when I replace the lifters.

I wonder what he really did wrong ??

IF THEY DECIDE TO REPLACE THE LIFTERS MAKE SURE THAT they ALSO REPLACE THE CAM!!! A new cam with old lifters or new lifters with an old cam is an invitation for self destruction!

Doc and Clifford,

Thank you so much for your help. The tech was able to push down on the lifter and get things going. I was able to pick it up and ride it home, it sounded good. Tomorrow I will take it for longer ride to check things out.

I have changed out the main jet to a DJ180 and made some adjustments to the PMS(out 2.5 turns) and it seems to be running fine. I will check the mileage over the next few days.

Sorry, I am so late thanking you guys. I really look to everyone here on the clinic for help. I am an old tractor mechanic. Just over the last few years, I have started doing my own wrenching on the R*.

bmatpt,

I just had the recall done on my bike and had no problems...glad to hear that it's running again.

I also have the DynoJet kit...I'm running a 170 main on the second from the top slot on the clip and I'm still running rich. I have a Barons BAK and short shot pipes. I'm probably going to try a 165 or 167.5 main and put the clip in the middle or bottom of the slots. I started messing with the jetting after I saw how black my plugs and pipe were and how much carbon buildup on the top of the pistons. As I've been leaning it out I can feel the improvement in power each time I move the clip to a leaner position.

glad they seem to have it fixed, keep an ear on it.
The 1600 is not one to get SVS, but your jetting is the same as what I run my 1700 at..
you might notice some gas smell or moderate fuel economy, but it will probably run nice and strong..
