Re:Valvetrain Noise 7 Years, 7 Months ago
The bike is a Silverado so its had a windshield since day one. It also has front lowers, aftermarket pipes, a Dynajet 3000 ignition, forward extended floorboards, no AIS and a rattle-free headlight (that was the first thing I fixed). I've put about 9000 miles on this machine so am very familiar with its quirks and squeaks. Last year I did a 2300 mile, 6 day ride and came home with a tired butt but no mental aggravation from a noisy motor. The tranny rebuild was about 2500 miles ago and it seems the engine has been getting "looser" (or at least sounding looser) ever since.

Great to hear from all of you! So I am not completely insane. Has anyone tried an oil cooler? and has anyone upgraded to a High flow oil pump? It seems like the condition we are discussing is called lifter bleed-down. The engine had gotten better after the second re-build but now is getting noisier. I will definitely change to synthetic, and I do live in South Florida, but I don't really get into it that much, but boy is it ever embarrasing with the stock exhaust. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm checking my valve settings using the technique described at the recent GDSW class (THOR presented the one I saw). Almost immediately after placing the feeler gauge between the valve and the rocker arm, the dial indicator starts to creep up - apparently the hydraulic lifter is bleeding out. Does anyone know if this is normal? I don't remember this happening at the class but it does somehow seem reasonable.

Barrett:

If you are still checking this site, you may want to take a look at the "Leaky lifter" topic.
