AIS / Sound 3 Years, 11 Months ago
I hate to ask, but I've read many posts and watched the sound video and still have a question for you seasoned riders.

I know the twin is full of quirky sounds and ya gotta love'em, but...

Is it my AIS causing this?

It's very high pitched, intermittent, sounds just like a military hearing test, can't tell where it's comming from. Sometimes it's like a morse code or a warning beep, but the lengths of the tones are varied. ... or a teapot that's getting ready for the long tone, but bumped up about four octaves.

It's normally while moving from 40 to 60 MPH; clutch in or out, very seldom heard on idle. Engine temp normal to the touch.

I'm about half def, and have tenitise from working on airplanes too long. It's almost like a ringing in the ears, but intermittent.

Could be the AIS. Could also be the belt is too tight.

I've got the same hearing problem and for the same reason. 10 years of jets will do it and it makes it real hard to detect where sounds are coming from. Like Musky said could be the belt or AIS.

What really scares me is the possibility that it's just in my head!

Found it!

Took it to the dealer and the mechanic took it for a spin. It was the clear plastic sheet between the windshield and headlight. He repositioned and lowered it and wa-la the noise is gone. Man, it was driving me insane! Like a dog whistle or somethin!

One of the reasons I dumped my AIS system is because of the chirping noise it made, sounded awful, kinda like a chrrp from a loose fan belt on an alternator. The check valves in the AIS can make an "aark-aark-aark" sound as the system sucks in air... and that gets really annoying fast!
(kinda like my kids in the back of the van sometimes! )

question, how low did he re-set that inner plastic? Mine sits about an inch and a half above the headlight. And not to sound real stupid here but, what exactly does that thing do for you??

Hammersly07,

I think in theory it is supposed to make the shield more aerodynamic and reduce buffeting through the gap. I had a problem with grit getting between the main shield and that panel and scouring the panel (dulling the finish), so I took the advice of one of the forum members and removed that spacer panel altogether. No ill effects whatsoever.

Make sure it's not the head light! Took me two weeks to find it but it made kind of chirping sound at about 50 - 60 miles per hour. I took off the front rim and went around the joint with black tape and it's holding so far.
