IS Snell certified helmet better than DOT? 4 Months, 2 Weeks ago
I thought so until I read this research article. Now I'm only buy DOT rather than Snell. Read for yourself and decide.

Someone started a thread on helmets so I thought I'd "stir the puddin" on it and give all you folks with bad weather something to do while you aren't riding.

DOT vs. Snell

Ride safe folks,

Great read... Have said for years that snell was a crock. I used to race cars.. and i seen some pretty bad things with snell helmets.. But the still told us that is what we had to wear to race..

Novelty is better'n both... those others are too heavy and too hot!

Not to mention how much cheaper they are!

Interesting article!
I had it explained to me in a little simpler terms that made a lot of sense. Basically in order to pass SNELL, a helmet has to be able to survive two collisions, while DOT only requires surviving one. That means that the SNELL helmets have to be constructed of a stiffer liner material to hold up to the first crash, meaning the liner will absorb less of the impact. A DOT helmet's liner can be softer, and therefore absorb more of the impact... so I think on that alone, I am going with a DOT helmet. Further, if I am ever (hope not!) in a crash, no way am I going to reuse the same helmet, and the DOT helmets are between 1/2 and 3/4 the price of a SNELL helmet.

So, DOT for me!

Very interesting. and even though I wear a helmet %98 of the time .

at least I have a choice in TX. I'm on vaca in NC and its annoying to know that I don't have a choice.

Let me morph a quote from someone else said in another thread on helmets:

When I get a novelty head, I'll get a novelty helmet.

I've been down the helmet or not road here before so I'm not gonna beat a dead horse here. Best advice is ride safe and try not to even need a helmet (Wishful thinking, I know )

I agree. My father in law just told me that he read that the last death at Myrtle Beach bike week this year was a guy slipping or hitting a curb when turning into a parking lot. "It" can pretty much happen anywhere at any speed. I just prefer the choice.

As far as the certifications, I wonder if government regulation waters things down. Like if DOT wasn't "required" then would it be a better cert? I wonder if consumer reports has ever done any reports on the various helmets & types & certs? I've always thought they were pretty fair in testing.

I've been a CR subscriber for 31 years... to the best of my recollection, they've never done anything by way of helmet testing. But it would make for a real interesting read. I wish they would.

I always thought DOT was the lesser of the 2...
Now I am confused.
