embarrassing moments 4 Months ago
the asphalt surfing subject reminded me of one of more embarassing moments. I rode my first century ride on Lafayette indiana about 10 years ago. A century ride for those that do not know is a hundred mile bicycle ride. I trained for several months for this ride and thought i was ready. I started out solo and was later picked up by a group riding in a pace line taking turns leading and breaking the wind. Now I had never done 100 miles without stopping before. so after about 50 miles we reach a small town with a rail road crossing and had to stop. I was tired and didnt twist my foot out of my "Look" clips on my pedals fast enough and went down when I came to a stop. so I pick my self up and ride on. We head down this long incline as it starts raining, I just barely touch the rear brake and bike jumps out from under me. I slide 20 - 30 feet in shorts.. talk about road rash. I break my derailer and bend the rear tire. But undaunted I keep going. After 7 hours on the bike and 100 miles I finally get back to where the ride started. this is the bad part. I lean my $1800 Carbon fiber TCR2 against the back of my truck and head inside to change. I'm exhausted. when I come out, I walk right past my bike, jump in the truck and back up. As I do I feel a thump! I have ran over my bike in front of like 600 people. There is a lady standing there actually crying saying "I tried to stop you!" Well the bike is stuck under the truck now. I have to pull forward and run over it again to get it out. Its in pieces. I was so embarassed I just threw it in the back of the truck and drove the hour home to not have to face anyone. BTW.. after my then 300 deductable on my home owners insurance... State Farm bought me another one. but I had to endure the laughing by insurance adjuster.

Re:embarrassing moments 4 Months ago
back in the day of kick starters (yeah, you young guys haven't lived) I fired my ride up and drove off. At the first stoplight I went to put my feet down and found that somehow when I put my foot on the peg I had lifted my leg high enough that the kick start lever was in my pant leg. Try as I might I couldn't get it out in the few seconds it took to fall over in the intersection. I had 360 degrees of laughter and not one person got out to help me get that damn bike off of me.
That was right up there with coasting backwards down my driveway on my bike and turning the front end and hitting the front brake at the same time. Instant launch of me in to street sans bike.
there is more over 40 years of riding but I hate to go there....

After I got my first bike (Honda Shadow Spirit 1100), I took it to a friends house to show it off. He had a sport bike (GSX1000, I think). I wanted to try his out (I'd never been on a sport bike before, nor since then). I took off on one wheel (not on purpose). Drove down the street, then back. I go to dis-mount the bike and forgot one thing...THE KICK-STAND!!!

I was all full of myself and looking so fine on my newly acquired 2001 Road Star, I pulled into the parking lot of the local Yamaha dealer on a Saturday when there was a parking lot full of people, doing a slow tight turn to be pointing out, I did it, I touched the front break, the bike started to lean over and I couldn't stop it, there in front of everyone, I gently set it down on its side, turned the key off and started taking my helmet off. People ran over like I had just wrecked at 100 MPH. I could feel all the eyes staring at me. Not quite as cool as yours, but yes, I understand...

Guess I was about 18 years old, my first street bike was an old 58 harley glide, was at a party and getting ready to leave, everyone comes out to see me off and hear the bike. so I jump on real cool like, and give the kick start a whirl. Oops, forgot to retard the timing with the left grip. she lets out the prettiest back fire and slings me over the handlebars..got a lot of applause for that little routine...

Its only embarrassing when you didn't mean to do that. All of my accidents have been "yeah.....I meant to do that."
