Powder Coaters 3 Months, 3 Weeks ago
I figure this would be as good a place as any to ask for information or guidance on powder coating.

I am curious about buying a powder coat system so I can coat modified parts or fabricated parts instead of spray painting, etc.

Have seen several systems from $70 on up and contain a variety of accessories. Does anyone or has anyone used a certain system and should I look at one that requires a seperate air hook up or one that already supplies the air. I have several compressors so the air is not a problem.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks

just remember that after you coat something, it has to be baked. I dont know for how long or how hot but i know they are baked. I just sent out my rims, rear hub and pulley to get coated.

Powder coating is easier that regular painting.

You'll obviously need the gun .... lots of places on line.

You need a clean area (large 50" TV box works quite well )

450 degree oven .... regular stove is OK ... pick up a used one somewhere.

Any compressor works.

For large parts you need the special heat lamps that you can buy where you buy the gun.

Piece of cake.

The parts are also electrically charged so that the coating process is stronger....thats why you can only powder coat metal

I knew a a good used electric stove would come in handy LOL!! All the junk I keep around and never throw out. Any particular thing to look for in the brand?? I am not looking into the professional ones just a quality one for odds and ends like brackets, rims, etc... Found a chicago brand, a Elite HOTCOAT kit, and several that dont require a compressor but think those might be a bit of trouble in the long run..

Thanks for input.

I really dont know which machines are better then others, but with many things like tools I would asume you get what you pay for.

Depends on how much you going to do. If it's a one shot deal then get the cheapest you can.

If you're looking for the longer haul, the one with an adjustable voltage supply.

Check out Casewell ... I think they have an Powder Coating 101 page.

If you're looking for a home powder coating system, I would go with the Eastwood HotCoat system. They've been around the longest, as far as I know and they've got an excellent selection of powders and tools.
