How do mods effect MPG? 4 Months, 4 Weeks ago
Hello all,
I'm doing a little fishing here before I do any significant mods to my 07 Roadie. Currently, my RS* is stock with the exception of the Stage 1 mod on the pipes and I'm getting a consistant 48-52 MPG. I see on the forum where many are getting anywhere from 38 - 45 MPG. My question is: does many of the mods done on the bike actually lower the MPG? Things like the BAK, Pipes, and Jetting?

That depends on the willingness of the person to keep at it until they get it tweaked as close to perfect as they can. You will see people who want to jet but only want to do it once. They want to know someone elses settings and that's what they use. They don't want to have to go back in multiple times. It's just plain luck if you hit it doing it that way.

And another big factor is once she sounds good and pulls better you get a case of happy wrist

Hey Midnight1700
Pipes shouldn't effect mileage much, but jetting can. If you don't stray to far from stock, you shouldn't tell to much difference. Some even get better. Others here can help you more on that. I went with the MaxAir airkit, and their recommended jetting, and my mpg went down about 5 mpg, but runs like a scalded dog. The way gas prices are rising, I may rethink my jetting though.

So, would it be safe to say that many of the mods will actually decrease MPG? And, it's basically the reduction in MPG is the cost for better performance? I do want to replace the pipes and possibly a BAK but those changes would come with a cost of lower MPG...

I would venture to say that the amount of MPG changing by mods is not much more if any at all than say riding witha passenger, or loading it with bags and trunks and filling those with stuff...putting on a few pounds or shedding pounds will affect it as well. Even a windscreen versus no windscreen messes with it.

And it is all in the wrist. I may get 40mpg but I also came off of sportbikes and I like to twist that wrist.

The more chrome and leather fringe that you have on your bike, the more horsies you can wring out of the engine. Double points for having leather fringe on your clutch, brake, throttle, and left handgrip!

To be honest it sounds like you are trying to talk yourself out of doing something you really don't want to do anyway. Don't do stuff just because others have. Your mpg is good. If the bike is happy don't touch it. Just ride and smile.

If you're looking to keep that mpg I'd never let anyone touch that carb, it'll do nothing but go down.

My opinion only.
