FRONT DISC ROTORS? 3 Months, 1 Week ago
|
|
HEY ALL,
I AM LOOKING TO TRY TO POLISH THE FRONT ROTORS....I WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE OUT THERE KNOWS IF THE TWO PARTS OF THE DISC CAN BE SEPARATED AND BE PUT BACK TOGETHER.IT WOULD BE A LOT EASIER TO POLISH THEM IF THEY WERE IN TWO PIECES.
I'D APPRECIATE ANY FEEDBACK FROM THE FORUM.
THANKS AS USUAL,
BUDS22

they are separate rotors, perhaps I don't understand your question. Are you asking how to remove the rotors?

HI SLY,
WHAT I'M TRYING TO FIND OUT IS, CAN YOU SEPARATE THE OUTER DISC FROM THE INNER DISC. THEY ARE HELD TOGETHER WITH THOSE ROUND CLIPS THAT SEEM TO BE TWO PIECES THAT ARE MASHED TOGETHER THAT ARE LOCATED BETWEEN THE OUTER DISC AND THE INNER ONE.
I'VE BEEN LOOKING AROUND THE INTERNET BUT CAN'T SEEM TO FIND THE ANSWER.

Not sure my jelly head is getting the question either, but I checked the parts exploded view, and it looks like each rotor, one on each side of the wheel is a single assembly. So two rotors that do not come in pieces but can be removed from the bike separately.
Hope that helps.

HEY AGAIN,
I AM TRYING TO FIND OUT IF THEY CAN BE SEPARATED. EACH DISC IS A TWO PART ASSEMBLY,HELD TOGETHER BY THOSE ROUND CLIPS AT SIX LOCATIONS. I BELIEVE THESE DISC'S ARE WHY THEY CALL THESE ROTORS AND THE CALIPERS FLOATING DISC BRAKES? I'M AM TRYING TO FIND OUT IF THEY COME APART.

Those circles means "floating disc" it better for braking and keeps down on the heat. Ive never heard of someone taking the two apart..

It looks to me like the "clips" you mention are pressed in by a machine to lock the two pieces together. Almost like a rivet, I guess. It doesn't look like the two can be separated and put back together. That's my .02 anyway.

Yes you can separate them but you won't be able to put them back together.
I've polished 4 discs and it's not that big of a deal to do them when together.
If you still want to separate them I think I saw a place where you could buy the connectors .... just don't ask me where.

I used an orbital sander for most of the work. When the paper is new and the edges sharp you can get quite close. Then finish off with a sanding disc with the dremmel.
Light pressure with the dremel and it move around or you'll 'score' the metal sot that when you polish it you notice 'divets'.
