Darn Oldie That's on an 01? What size was Stock and what did size did you go to
went from a 150 to a metz 160, but i will tell you this i went way down on mpgs, if your speedo i reading fast, logging more miles, your mpgs are off to, went from 44-48 after the tire 34 -38, so if you get alot of mpgs, check it after youre speedo fix, i remember h12get saying that his mpgs werent so great too

Re:GPS Speed vs Speedometer? 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Your mileage will drop, because it's more accurate now. That was one of the things that bothered me about it being off. I've been trying to figure out mileage and if I'm getting 200 miles to 4 gals or am i getting 185 miles to 4 gallons? I won't be able to test it with GPS tonight, have a honey do list to take care of.

So, I still need to know, is it fixable? Is is a warranty issue? If it's off on purpose, WHY?

I know that it might seam like I'm becoming a bit of a jerk about this, and I'm trying to keep my sense of humor about it. I think it's an issue that needs to be confronted.

In my Jeep, I have a Garmin and use the speedometer on it, because with the larger tires, the Jeep's speedometer is goofed.

Frank, jeep sells replacement gears that are cheap and easy to install which correct the speedo. If I recall all you need to know is tire diameter. Ask any jeep dealer and they can set you straight. Replacing the gear takes about five minutes.

A word of caution....don't try driving your bike and holding the gps at the same time. Nearly dropped the gps and in retrospect I feel fortunate that I didn't dump my bike as I scrambled to catch the stupid gps. Scared the crap out of me.

Re:GPS Speed vs Speedometer? 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago
I tried the ODO vs GPS, and it looks like it's very close, the Speed-0 is still off, but at least now I know that my Gas Mileage calculations are OK.

I'm going to check with Yamaha to see if I can get an accurate Speedo, I don't like guessing. If I get stopped by the Po-Po, and he asks "do you know how fast you were going?" I want to be able to tell him vs saying "I don't know, how fast was I going?"

Has anyone found "the reason" that it's off yet? I would be interested in knowing.

Thanks, Yakman. I'm good, for now. Especially since I'm really not driving the Jeep very much. If I got a GPS for the bike, I would get it with a handlebar RAM mount.

Re:GPS Speed vs Speedometer? 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago
crotch rockets deal with this issue a lot since they are chain driven and swap sprockets often. most are 10% off from the factory, and when you change sprockets they can be 10-20% off. i installed a speedo healer on my gsxr, and it adjusted the odo and speedo.

you start at a mile marker, then drive 5 miles. once you get to the 5th mile marker you drive 60mph and calculate how many seconds past the mile marker you go before your odo reads 5 miles. then you take those seconds, and convert it to the % your odo/speedo is off and adjust the speedohealer with dip switches to match.

I doubt the speedo/odo on the road star are any different than other bikes. they use a sensor on the engine to read speed/rpm i believe, and you just splice into that to connect the speeedohealer.

I'm still hung up on the accuracy thing. I want gauges to be accurate, other wise, why have them? Maybe Yami should make it an option to be on or not??

Thanks to everyone who put up with my banter and offered helping info.

I bought the Speedo healer for my CBR, and have one on my R* too. I like knowing that I'm on with the MPH. I give the state too much money already!!!

I know, the GPS is typically very close to correct, what I need to know, is there a fix for it? If you think about it, every 6500 actual miles my bike will have registered 7000 miles, that doesn't help calculate mileage, for fuel, tires, warranty, resale.... etc...

What's a guy to do???

I wouldnt worry about it too much. you now know how much your speedo is off so you can avoid a ticket. My warranty doesnt state a mileage and even if you run 20k on your bike, an additional 1000 or 2 wont make a difference in your resale at all. I'm not trying to be a smart alec, I like things to work also, but I wouldnt lose any sleep over it.
