Minnesota just passed the same law. A license plate light has always been the law.

I guess if you can make an arguement for sideways plates some one would also say that they can read upside down as well.

Looks like I've got to ditch the lay down set up I'm running.

I can't believe they had to add "letters facing outward from the vehicle" in there.

Here are the new MN plate law changes in case anyone's interested.

From what I gather this is the new stuff with the changes in red.

Sec. 43. Minnesota Statutes 2006, section 169.79, is amended to read:
169.79 VEHICLE REGISTRATION; DISPLAYING LICENSE PLATES.

Subd. 3. Rear display of single plate. If the vehicle is a motorcycle, motor scooter,
motorized bicycle, motorcycle sidecar, trailer registered at greater than 3,000 pounds
gross vehicle weight (GVW), semitrailer, or vehicle displaying a dealer plate, then one
license plate must be displayed horizontally with the identifying numbers and letters
facing outward from the vehicle and must be mounted in the upright position
on the
rear of the vehicle.

Subd. 7. Plate fastened and visible. All plates must be (1) securely fastened so as
to prevent them from swinging, (2) displayed horizontally with the identifying numbers
and letters facing outward from the vehicle, and (3) mounted in the upright position.
The
person driving the motor vehicle shall keep the plate legible and unobstructed and free
from grease, dust, or other blurring material so that the lettering is plainly visible at all
times. It is unlawful to cover any assigned letters and numbers or the name of the state
of origin of a license plate with any material whatever, including any clear or colorless
material that affects the plate's visibility or reflectivity.

Reference Florida Motorcycle Laws NEW Oct 1,2008: The fines & penalties have increased dramatically, primaily due to the "crotch-rocketeers" with their wheelies & stoppies on the roads & highways,(especially in traffic)& their Fleeing from LEO's who try to stop them or at least get close enough to read a tag. The new "fines" are:
Both Wheels on Ground (if not)
1st Offense $1076.00
2nd Offfense (1 yr D/L revocation) + $2576.00
3rd Offense (3rd Deg.Felony;10yr D/L Rev. +
Mandatory Court appearance) $5000.00

Tag Improperly affixed/Displayed : SAME PENALTIES
And your bike can be impounded & forfeited also.
Unfortunately, a few bad bikers have forced the legislature to enact these penalties on ALL bikers.

All this seems to suggest that we follow the law. Not that I always do...speed limits is not always what I'm doing...but I willing to pay to play. I can see the point on the plates being on the back. I've often wondered how it could be seen from the right rear, but mostly I was thinking about the break light being seen.
