Stock tire life expectancy 2 Months, 1 Week ago
|
|
|
Hey Fellas,
I just turned over 12,000 miles and I still have the stock tires. The tread looks pretty good as I mostly do just solo riding. Is 12,000 miles pretty good for stock, or am I pretty lucky to be getting that much out of stock? Thanks for the replies,

12K was the end of the rope for mine, I picked up a nail and had a flat on rear, and although tread was perfect on front, I seen some voids I would not run on, so both new at 13K. Start shopping, and take a real in depth look at your tires now. And the pressure is low and you have a hole in each one I'll bet!
Has to have a hole in it to get the air in.

At this point, if you're riding an '05 I'd be more worried about age on the tire than amount of tread left. I'd bet the date code on your rubber is mid 2004, so you're pushing 4.5 years on those tires. I'd be replacing them even if there was a good deal of tread left.

I got a little over 15,000 out of the stock rear and over 19,000 out of the stock front.

how do you know when your tire is ready to be replaced? I either have changed mine when the mileage is around 10K or I ride over a screw or a defect in the tire (bubble once in a Mezler)

Yeah, I haven't ridden it as much as I would have liked, but I guess I'll start doin some shoppin. Ive read a lot of good things about the Metzler ME880's. Do you guys just go to the dealership to buy them or can you get a better deal online? Thanks for the replies,

i normally change the rear when it gets to the legal limit, and thatīs around 10,000.
the front aint too far behind since i fitted the R1 calipers and braided lines, so i change the two together.

Stealership is usually the most expensive place to buy them. Online usually the least expensive. BUT, if you buy online and bring them in to be installed they will usually charge you more than if you bought from them. Shop around for tire prices AND install prices. Around here, the independent shops are usually your best bet.
Oh, and I recommend the Avon Venoms. (AM41 and AM42)
