My ride started out real good today, weather was perfect, about 75F and my Pearl was running just fine, ran the six miles past farms and pastures, sun shining, and a bright blue sky..hit the main road in town, Hwy 27, and headed north to rockwood TN, about 25 miles, then hung a left on 70 and headed west thru some twisties up to the plateau..and into Crossville. It's a neat little town that has that ecclectic feel to it, with a tattoo shop, mountain guitars, and banjos, and several eateries that cater to folks that want a special meal..I had lunch there, which was at a picnic table that had fried chicken, green beans, mashed tates, okra, and all the other stuff..All in bowls, Which a cute little country gal kept fillin, ,,It was good..Anyway. I putts around up there for a while and then headed back to spring city on hwy 68. Headed back down the mountain, just crusin along, enjoying the day, and a fella pops up on a Suzi Blvd, so we ride along for a while, I have no clue who he is or where he's from. He wants to push it a little, so I let Pearl breath and give him something to play with, knowing that we are on a twisty down mountain run. Pearl is outstanding in the straights, but she's hung a little low for the curves........Well, about half way down, I back off, and he keeps going.........4 miles down the road I see him layed out in the road, his Suzi crumpled up in a ditch, and a bunch of folks standing around him. That was an eye opener for me, kinda like a reality check...One minute were having a grand time, and a split second later, sorrow and pain strike.... I stop and see that he's still breathing, but really tore up, his helmet is laying on the road next to him all battered up, but in one piece, I assume someone removed it from his head. Had an obvious broken leg, and multiple cuts and scrapes...He was consious when I got there and was able to answer some basic questions like what day it was, and his name. Paramedics then arrived and took him off..
I got back on my bike and went home, I'm of a mind right now, that I'm glad it wasn't me, I feel somewhat responsible, and need to digest what happened today..I just want to tell you all to be careful..

Damn.... Sorry to hear that the ride was marred by the accident. I went out yesterday morning, and the fella' I met up with was on a BMW sports bike. He took off like a shot, when we were riding, zipping through turns, doing 20mph over the speed limit. I generally limit myself to 5-10mph over, and I didn't feel comfortable with cranking around the curves the way he was, so I just let him go and caught up with him on the straightaways.
It was a clear lesson to me, that even when riding with others, I'm riding my own ride, and I'd rather be a little slow and remain within my skill parameters, than to break my neck trying to catch up with someone else. I've got nothing to prove, and my bike is fast enough for me...
I hope that aside from the broken leg, your anonymous friend is going to be okay. "Bruises heal, bones mend, and chicks dig scars."
Oh yeah: It wasn't your fault. You were riding your motorcycle and he was riding his. You weren't trying to push him or race him, so 100% of the blame rests with him. Don't beat yourself up, pal.

Well, regardless.... It could just have easily been YOU, laid out there. He was riding and he was responsible for controlling his bike. Every time we throw a leg over these machines, it's with the knowledge that it could be for the last time. I still say that it was his bike and he was responsible, and that means it was up to him to know his limits and the limits of his machine.

I have to agree with Frank. You weren't controlling his throttle. We have to know an understand the limits of our bikes and our riding skills. I know when something feels too fast for me. I slow down, regardless of what the other guy may be doing. You are not responsible, at all!

Thanks for the pat on the back guys, I need it..I've been down, and I've had friends that have been down.. For some reason, this one hit home..If I had not accepted the challenge, He may have just road on down the road,,I'll never know,,I guess that's what is bothering me.....I probably would not have said anything here, but I strongly felt a need to pass on the experience if it can help someone..Like I said, tomorrow will be better.. And I did need a pat on the back...
