Helmets 2 Months, 1 Week ago

Talking to my Son today about Helmets.... I have a rather old full face Nolan Helmet, that fits me great and has almost no wind noise... Have a New G-Max that fits great also but has a tremendous amount of wind noise with a full shield on it. ( fine without shield).. My Son says to purchse a Snell rated Helmet that costs 4 to 6 hundred Bucks..... I told him I am mearly an electronic Technician and cannot see paying that much for a Helmet... He says... sure dad... "It's only your Head"... what do you guys think? Are the High Dollar Helmets worth the $ over the cheaper Helmets?

Tell your son it would be a great Christmas gift. And you promise to act surprised.

There are a lot of post here about helmets, one comes to mind that is linked to several articles about snell vs DOT rating. Just because a helmet cost 500 bucks doe not mean its a better helmet or will be less inclined to wind noise. If you run a search you will find the articles.

I've got a DOT/Snell rated helmet that was $145 from HJC. No need to go top of the line Arai.

There's a lot of quality helmets out there at more reasonable prices. I'm sure you'll find on that fit's your needs (and you son's). Good hunting.

There are some out there who assert that helmets made to the SNELL standard are actually too hard. By that they mean that while the helmet will pass the SNELL testing without damage, your head which is IN the helmet will take the punishment instead. Google SNELL vs. DOT and see what you get.
I know a perfectly safe helmet can be had for way less than $500-600.

Motorcycle Consumer News tested helmets and price didn't mean much, some of the better ones were inexpensive and some of the high dollar ones did poorly in tests. You can look them up on the Internet. And maybe find the article. I subscribe. MC

Experience is a tough way to learn ... because, you get the test first and the lesson afterwards.

Ditto. $150-$200 is the most I'd give for a helmet, as long as it was DOT AND Snell rated. Anything more than that really seems exorbitant.

Two coworkers/MSF instructors told me the same thing. The Snell rating does not garner the same clout it used to.
