When I buy a new helmet, I put it on, snug up the chin strap, and then rock the helmet left and right and backwards and forwards to determine how much play there is. Then I move my head around to get the feel and the weight of it. I pick points to my left and right so I can determine how much peripheral vision I'm losing, if any. That's pretty much it. I live on a corner lot.... this morning as I was leaving the house, some fool came flying around the corner, I hit the binders as I was at the apron of the driveway, realized my legs are shorter than I thought and layed her down in the driveway (embarasing to say the least), rolled off and slammed my head on the ground. I'm 100% OK, a bit pissed at the fool, but happy that I raked the leaves yesterday, because the bike actually landed in the leaf pile, not a scratch! I'll have to get the helmet checked out thou.
