Book Review - The Biker's Handbook 1 Month, 1 Week ago

Picked this up at a local bookstore because it looked entertaining. The author spends the first two chapters trashing Japanese bikes and saying that Harley is the end-all/be-all, and that anyone who rides a Japanese bike is a "wannabe." The book is loaded with F-bombs and anecdotes that center around being a drunken idiot on two wheels. Further, when people have posted poor reviews, the author has commented back like a screaming little girl, with atrocious spelling and grammar, to boot. Color me unimpressed. My review follows:

There was very little "handbook" about this book, and Mr. Barbieri is the kind of goofball that I do my best to avoid. I've ridden a number of different Harleys and they are fine bikes, but the metric cruisers (Yamaha Road Star, Kawasaki Boulevard, etc.) compare very favorably and in many ways, surpass Harley, and for about a third the price.

I ride a Yamaha Road Star 1600. The only "wannabe" I wanna' be, is on my bike, out on the road. (And if some Harley snob was pulled over and having trouble with his bike, I would pull over and give him a hand.)

To real bikers who are steeped in the "culture," it's not WHAT you ride. It's the fact that you ride. Period. A bunch of us get together and trash-talk each others bikes because some of us ride metric and others ride American. What we are passionate about and what's really important, is riding and the brotherhood of the road and the wind.

If some ignoramus feels the need to look down their nose at another biker for the machine that they ride, perhaps that says more about that person, rather than the rider.

As for the rest of the anecdotes, they were entertaining, I guess. I can hear stories like that from just about any of my buddies, and I can tell a few, myself.

In short, I don't feel that this book was anything even close to what its title suggests. Pretty disappointed with it, all the way around.

I especially enjoyed the Amazon review by Ruth Wald, it's actually the author himself using a fake name to drum up business. On several reviews he defends himself using the Wald name obviously forgetting to change log ins. What a doofus.

Thanks for taking the time to post a review. I wouldn't have bought it anyway, but I'm glad to see folks like Frank and RoadieeFF taking the bullet for the rest of us.

RoadieFF,

Yeah, I knew that, but you did look into the reviews to find out about the author's back-door promotion. I appreciate that.

Re:Book Review - The Biker's Handbook 1 Month, 1 Week ago
that's classic asshattery there....

been reading a few myself biker types books lately.

Life & times of Sonny Barger - Real interesting and worth the read. http://www.amazon.com/Hells-Angel-Barger-Angels-Motorcycle/dp/0060937548/ref=pd_sim_b_16.

Angels of Death - A good read that covers the HA around the world. Seemed very "factual" and not a lot of flashy buzz words that hype things up. http://www.amazon.com/Angels-Death-Inside-Biker-Empire/dp/0786717440/ref=pd_sim_b_2

Running with the devil - take the angels of death book above and slather it with lots of fluff and turn it into a woman's romance novel. read the one above instead. http://www.amazon.com/Running-Devil-Story-Infiltration-Angels/dp/1592289762/ref=pd_sim_b_6

Under and Alone: The True Story of the Undercover Agent Who Infiltrated America's Most Violent Outlaw Motorcycle Gang - Inside view of the Mongols from the agent that infiltrated them. Very entertaining read and kinda sad if even half of it is true. http://www.amazon.com/Under-Alone-Undercover-Infiltrated-Motorcycle/dp/0812969529/ref=pd_sim_b_1

Honor Few, Fear None: The Life and Times of a Mongol - Mongols from the inside view from the leader. A totally different perspective as you can imagine from Under & Above. It actually helps understand how the govt manipulates things. Not saying these guys are saints but the DA often is often rather overzealous. http://www.amazon.com/Honor-Few-Fear-None-Mongol/dp/0061137898/ref=pd_sim_b_3

And for sheer debauchery -

Tommyland - Tommy Lee autobiography. damn I'd love to be a rock star. all you can eat buffet of drugs, alcohol & 'tang. and apparently it all makes you invincible. if the average man did half of his life we'd be dead... http://www.amazon.com/Tommyland-Tommy-Lee/dp/0743483448/ref=pd_sim_b_90

Don't Try This At Home - Dave Navarro autobiography. want to know what its like to do heroin? read this. its so disjointed and random that you'll need to be on drugs to understand it though. http://www.amazon.com/Dont-Try-This-At-Home/dp/B0009K76BM/ref=pd_sim_b_10

Nikki Sixx's "Heroin Diaries" is also an awesome read, and graphically stunning. Very good book...

I'll read it only if you promise that it's better than the album. For me, the album is way too polished by the industry for my taste. (then again this is coming from someone who can't stop listening to Chinese Democracy)
