Ran out this morning to look at mine (29 degrees). Some roughness, but hard to see because of black finish. It is obviously casting marks from the aluminum case.
I wouldn't give it a second thought, but, if you wanted, you could get some Yami engine paint, rub or lightly scrape the rough areas smooth and repaint.

Mine is an 07 Roadie and when I compared it with the 2000 cc vulcan the fit and finish was so much better. I am ok with the casings

Fit, Finish and deatiling, or lack of it, is one of the reason's Japanese Metric bikes of all description
are less expensive than their American or European competition.
I don't usually keep my bikes long enough for it to be an issue.

That's called die check. The face of the die (die casting process) has become slightly cracked. It just means that your casing was made on an older die. This is common in the die casting process. It is too bad they don’t spend the time to process the finish down smooth. Well, I suppose it's one reason why the cost of a new bike is reasonable.

MS1700,
Trying not to show my ignorance, but I can't tell what I am looking at. I don't have anything on my '07 that looks like that.

Yes you do. That is the crankcase on the right side of the engine. Look just forward of the gearbox in that opening between the gearbox and the chrome side plate of your engine and you can see the crankcase casting. The pic is an extreme closeup view.

'07 here. I've got it too. Does a number on my chamois, but unless someone is cleaning my bike, they'll never know it's there. Hell, just cover it in chrome!!

My '06 is also similar. Shoddy casting. Doesn't bother me, I only notice it when cleaning.
