Map said: That's called die check. The face of the die (die casting process) has become slightly cracked.

You're right here. The aluminum material seeps into the die checks and caused these tiny fins and roughness. Again, if you want to clean things up you can get Yami engine paint, scrape or rub the defects smooth and re-paint.

You could repaint with BLACK cause it looks so much cooler and will make your scoot much faster

Re:Poor Finish- 1 Month ago
My 06 has similar if not worse on the right side, particularly visible on the case behind the cam cover and in front of the transfer case. It does not seem to be as bad or obvious on the Black Midnights, but the silver engines it is quite obvious. These are casting imperfections and not the power coating. It is a shame that Yamaha does not clean up the cases before powder coating. I try not to let it bother me, and if I ever tear the engine down it is going to get smoothed out and black powder coated. I think my pearl white 06 would look awesome with a black engine and bright diamond cut fin edges. Always something more to do

Or just the diamond cut fins.....

My case on my `06 is kinda rough like shown in the picture, but I don't worry about it. I just ride the dickens out of it......

Complaining about casting marks on a Road Star is like complaining about brush marks on the Mona Lisa. C'mon guys, the RS is a fine machine and you know it!
