AIS Removal 5 Years, 3 Months ago
Hey Fellas,
I am new to the site and was wandering what are the benefits of removing the AIS system. Any help would be appreciated. I haven't messed with my AIS system yet, and was wandering if it is worth it, and how hard is it. Thanks

Welcome to the Clinic Jetmechanic,
I myself think removing th AIS system makkes the bike look cleaner. It think it also gets rid of the annoying "chirping noise" created by the AIS reed valves.
I am not sure whether or not removing the AIS will increase performance though,
(Doc Shadow, Musky or others would know for sure.)
Try typing: AIS into the "search forum" box at the top right of your screen, and hit your Enter button. There's lots to read up on and you might be able to make your decision based on all the info.

Oh yeah,
We must not forget... One of the most common reasons for AIS removal is the typical "Roadie backfire" which is caused by air being introduced into the exhaust system by the AIS.

It's Ugly. Cuts down on decal popping. It's ugly. Some people have other noises. It's ugly.

Boy....I remember back when my bike was bone stock and I still had the AIS on, that on an extreme hard decel, my bike sounded like 10 12guage shotguns going off simultaneously. THe AIS pumps extra air in, and that I guess you could say, would cause a lean condition....therefore causing the popping and backfiring out the pipes. I removed the AIS, installed aftermarket pipes and no more popping and backfiring.

See the thing is, I have the Vance and Hines staggered short exhausts, and I have never had any popping or backfiring or anything like that. Also, do I have to remove the gas tank to remove the AIS? I am not familiar with the AIS, PMS adjustment or anything with that system. Any help would be appreciated.

Het jet

The AIS and the PMS aren't really connected. Taking the AIS off won't require you to mess with anything alse. If you go into the tech tips and scroll down you will find the AIS folder. It tells you how to remove it depending on if you have a 1600 or 1700. Also if you have the California model. I didn't have to take the tank off but I had to take the bolt out of the back and raise the back up a little.

There's nothing saying you have to take it off so don't feel any pressure to. It won't hurt a thing to leave it on.

Post edited by: Musky, at: 2007/02/02 11:14

Evnin all ....I put off removing my AIS because it was not in my way and my bike ran fine no backfiring etc and to me it made the motor look fuller and it covered the spot behind my rectifier. After installing the Dooleys it would pop once when decelling so I decided to rid myself of that then I will hopefully dial it in after I put the Mixmax screw in.I think you guys were right it looks better ....the motor looks more defined and in my mind I just opened up a new supply of cool air to hit the motor straight on.....Coug
