It shouldn't pose any problem. A pacemaker only activates if the pulse rate falls below a certain number of beats per minute. There is some concern for about 6-12 months after the operation, until the unit actually seats into the pectoral muscle. After that, a rider with a pacemaker should be just fine. Basically, it's taking over for the sinus node in the heart. Being around electromagnetic fields and/or high voltage can cause issues, which is why people with pacemakers are not supposed to go through metal detectors or have MRIs done.

WithOUT the pacemaker, the heart may intermittently stop -- Not quite a full-on heart attack, but enough to make the individual briefly lose consciousness, and THAT is a dangerous condition.

If a person has a pacemaker and it's functioning correctly, and has been in for longer than one year, I personally don't see that it would be a contraindication for riding a motorcycle.

Disclaimer: This is not and does not constitute nor imply medical advice in any way, shape, or form. The best and surest advice, is that one clear it through their cardiologist before operating a motorcycle, bearing in mind the potential for personal injury and/or fatality in the event of a mishap. There is no substitute for personal, individual responsibility.

That's what I thought Frank. we did a google on it and came up with some info that the engine should be more than 15" from the pacemaker. I was thinking he'd be OK, And I was wondering why he asked us instead of his Dr. I think he just saw Schatzies legs and wanted to strike up a conversation. But it is something to know in case one of us has one installed. How much chrome can you buy instead of a pacemaker?

You are just a wealth of information, Frank. Thank you. I'd probably need to get a pacemaker and keep it on standby if I ever ran across your Bear. That nose that close to my face would surely make my heart stop!

Stick with the Roadie and a Thermos of coffee in the saddlebag...infinitely more satisfying (and cost effective).

A very close friend of mine rode his 1300 VTX for a couple years with a pace maker. He is older , and thought it wiser to sell it and not risk the risk. But he had no issue with it what so ever. BB

Schatzie, Bear would snuffle and sniff you and make you giggle. It's like being tickled by a friendly polar bear. He's a big ol' sweetie. Five minutes with him, and you'd be hopelessly in love. Such is the Power Of The Bear.

Re:Pace maker? 3 Years, 3 Months ago
another concern - most modern pace makers have a sensor in them to detect increased activity, such as running, and respond by speeding up the heart, if you are riding on a rough road the pacer may think you are running and speed up your heart, (this can even happen in a car) in most situations this will not hurt you though you may feel the increased heart rate, but if you have a history of heart problems this sped up pace may induce chest pain... and it may make it hard to relax while riding ... only way to find out is to go for a ride and see if it bothers you...

My buddy Bob has had a pacemaker for about 3 years now and rides a Suzuki C50. No problems.
