I don't have a GPS on my scooter, but I have used GPS on the road and in the air. The ground based GPS does more than give you directions. It helps you find places quickly. I wanted to find a particular restaurant yesterday in a town with which I am unfamiliar. The GPS until told me how far both were from and what direction. I actually went to the "further" one because it was more or less on the way to my next stop. Yes I could have stopped, looked in a phone book, found them both on the map and plotted them - but what if you were in a town with a 12 of the same? I like my GPS. A friend had one on his bike when we went to Rolling Thunder - again it was great at finding restaurants... We had our inter-state route plotted, but the side trips were enhanced by GPS.

Sorry again.

Capt'n Pugwash was a British cartoon series I used to watch when I was a kid. Fearless pirates indeed.

I still don't get it.... I hear what everyone is saying but here's my take on it. I've been riding and driving around this great country of ours for the past 31 years and not once in all those years have I NOT been able to find a gas station, a place to eat, a place to sleep, etc, etc, etc..... Sure I've been in unfamiliar territory where I didn't know the roads or which way I needed to go at that exact minute, but I've always managed to find my way back home. I guess I look at it like this....

I was always very anal when it came to planning my backpacking trips. I mean, I'd have it planned down to what time I'd arrive at a given destination!!! Then one year things happened that were completely unexpected. And I was frantic!!! (And that's putting it lightly. Believe me when I say that there is a whole other story here...) At first I thought, OMG!! this can't be happening.... But in the end, things turned out fine and it was one of the best trips I'd ever taken. I met people I'd otherwise never have met and experienced kindness from total strangers that was completely unexpected. That's when I remembered something I'd read earlier; You plan a trip down to the very last detail but, the adventure begins when things don't go as planned.

So personally, I look forward to coming to that crossroads in the middle of nowhere and not knowing what direction I need to go. That's when the adventure begins.......

Look at it this way Aaron, when satellites fail and all the GPS's go down at least you and I will be able to get where we are going besides when I am out on my bike it is always a pleasure ride and I NEVER ride with a time schedule so getting lost is an adventure as you suggested .I also always ride SOLO so there is never anyone poking me in the ribs asking when we are going to get there,I'm hungry,or I gotta go to the bathroom ..Coug

Ugh.... Vandals, too. So senseless.... My wife had owned her new car less than a week, and someone keyed the crap out of it, all over the hood.

What the hell? What is gained by doing something like that?

Both thieves and vandals suck!! When I was in the Marine Corps and if we found we had a thief in the barracks, the higher-ups (the brass) would say, "Handle it" and that person was taken care of on our own terms (within reason) with no questions asked.....

Having said that, I would like to add one final thing regrding the GPS rant. I understand the value of the technology and using one when "time is money". Like a lot of you have said, you are professional drivers and it's a lot easier to find a destination using the GPS than trying to find it on a map. Or finding alternate routes that will save time. But just to use one for the sake of making route finding easier or finding your way back home, I'll stick to maps and the compass in my head.

Thanks to all for your input and insight and I'd like to thank the powers that be that run the Clinic for giving us a place for a good-natured debate, whether it's motorcycle related or not.

In The Wind,
Aaron
