gas mileage 4 Years, 12 Months ago
Hey, hows it going,
I was wondering what kind of gas mileage ya are getting. I am only getting like 26-28 miles to the gallon. The bike is stock except for the Vance and Hines short shot staggered exhausts. Do I need to look at something, or is this pretty much normal for a stock 05 R* Thanks,
P.S. Also ordered the floorboard extensions, thanks for the help

Hey jet

I was getting about 30 stock. Now about 44. People will disagree that they come jetted rich but I think they do. But make sure you are figuring your mileage correctly. You need to figure it by actual gas used. A lot of people figure it's a 5.3 gallon tank. Reserve is a gallon. So my mileage is.... Whatever. You can't do it that way and be accurate..

Sounds alittle on the low side. You sure the carb hasn't been fiddled with? Are you heavy on the trottle? Are you running a larger windshield?
Mines had a few mods, I'm a big guy, but on a summer day, no windshield and average riding, I can get 175 miles before flipping to reserve. Now throw that W/S on and the MPG falls quickly. Jack rabbit it all the time, MPG falls quickly. Couple thing to consider.

My bike was used when she was purchased and was mostly stock with the exception of vance and hines pipes. I was getting at best 38-40 MPG avg. After adding the BAK and ported intake the variance is greater but I have gotten close to 50 MPG, but my avg is about 45. I got the best mileage on a ride in North Carlona on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is a scenic Road where the road is heavily monitored for speed and the limit is 45. If most of my tank is burnt on the interstate and I run a avg speed of 70-75 then it drops to about 44.

I am far from a expert on jetting and carb set ups , but I think if the carb is set up properly and you run at normal crusing, 60-65, you should be getting at least 42-47 mpg. But if you stay on it mileage will drop dramatically.

After the BAK, Intake and the baffles were removed I stayed on it alot and only got around 35. But I loved the sound and really rode it hard. So I guess milage will vary depending on riding style and carb set up.

100% stock (with stage one exhaust mod) 05 Midnight and I get low 40's since day one. And I'm not easy on the throttle either. I must have gotten one that wasn't set rich.

My scooter averaged 38 city and 46 highway after the first 1,000 miles on the clock. I have since added Cobra Speedster Slash cuts, BAK, AIS removal, and jetted (170 main, 4th clip, PMS 3 turns out). I recently took a long day ride and got 46.3 miles per gallon at 70 mph (193 miles before the low fuel light came on). City hovers around 38-39 mpg. For a 1700 cc engine that is pretty good. My old 750 Honda averaged about 40 city and 45 highway.

If you push it up to 80+ and do a lot of hard throttle ups it will come down considerably. I have done some fast rides with the boys and gotten down in the mid 30's.

I would look for leaks and double check how the mileage is calculated. If pipes are black and plugs are black you may be rich. My scooter was border line lean when it was stock.
