Advanced Riders Safety Course 2 Years, 10 Months ago
|
|
I am taking the advanced riders safety course tomorrow morning. I was just wondering if any of you had taken it and what I had ahead of me. I do not intend to put myself or my bike in jepordy just to pass the course. A member of our ALR post is an instructor so we are all getting a reduced price of $65 for the course. I sure could use a little discount on my insurance. Fill me in on what they do if you don't mind. Thanks guys! BTW been riding 42 years now.

Hey Curt
The course is something I have considered but as you said that you would not want to damage yourself or your bike...Same here.
Let us know what all is involved when your done. I am sure it will be a good time regardless.

I've decided to become an MSF instructor. I have to wait until this summer to take the instructor course and then I will have to start out teaching the beginning riders course. Seems a good way for a retired old goat teach the young bucks how to stay alive for a few extra miles.
I won't have any information on the course until I finish the instructor class.
Good luck and have safe fun.

I took it here in Pa, it's free for us.. It is basically the same as the beginner road course except your doing it on your bike. The box gets smaller, it wild how tight you can really turn one of these when you have to.
I have seen a few people drop their bike on the quick stop, only because of nerves, they were thinking instead of doing, know what I mean?
You'll be fine!

Free WOW down here it is normally $175 I think. You guys are lucky.
I'm sure our taxes reflect the cost some how as we all know, there is nothing truly free except God's love.
And the way the taxes might go up under the current administration it might wind up being free in the entire lower 48

Took the Advanced last year. I was hoping that it was more advanced than it was. As another poster said, it's some of the same skills that are taught in the basic course, but on your bike. The pace of the training is a bit more rapid. If you've been riding a while you should have no trouble with most of it. However even seasoned riders find the "box" can be a challenge if they haven't mastered slow ride techniques. I think they should spend time teaching slow ride skills, but for our class it wasn't part of the course.
If you want to get slow ride skills honed to a razor point Ride Like a Pro is the way to go. It's money WELL spent.

Well made it thru the course today. Boy throwing that 800 pound bike around for 4 hours in a tight space will wear you out. Like you said Mark the small box got me. On the first try I laid the bike down because I wasn't turning my head around far enough. It didn't hurt the bike I layed it down very gentle and the crash bar did what it was supposed to do. That is the second time it had done its job. I was just standing up and it went down between my legs. My riding buddy Bo wasn't so lucky he laid his new Venture down and was pined under it we had to pull the bike off him. It scraped his fairing up real bad and his saddle bags. I have trouble with my neck and can't turn my head far enough some times which is my main problem. Now that I know where the course is I plan on going out and running thru it a few times a year. I must say I walked away feeling like I had learned a lot and the need to practice till it becomes 2nd nature. I would recommend that any one should take it.

I tell you what, that was a learning experience! I thought I was some kind of rider till I took that course
Then I found out there is a lot I don't know and can't do. I practice in the Mall parking lot, I've about got it where I can turn the Chicken around inside of two parking spaces on a good day, tight circle.
We all have a LONG way to go if the truth were known..
