I was having problems with my back/tailbone and I went to my orthopedic surgon to get checked. In the process, i found he rides a Road King but he removed the stock seat and installed a Mustang then put a gel pac in it. Anyway, when I told him I had an Ultimate, he said get the Mustang. Never did but i'm leaning that way. He swore by the mustang....a back surgen who rides....gotta love it, and at least consider his recommendatoin....but too recommend what ever you get, get the back rest...helps a bunch.

Good luck

Has said back surgeon ever owned used any other brand of aftermarket seat? If not, his recommendation of Mustang is mute. It's amazing how many people will claim whatever they bought is the best when they've never tried or owned anything different.

i didn't specifically ask him at the time, but he might have tried others, so your question, while quip might be totally unfounded. its possible he did a multitude of research prior to settleing on the mustang or, had a garage full of aftermarket seats. or may be he was just talking about something that workded out for him and was passing on a opinion.

I know that the ultimate increased my riding over the stock but not achieve the results i was hoping for even after the seat was altered by using a gel pac. so i might consider the advise of the dr. especially if i could get a perscription for it and have the insurance pick it up.. ..it might be worth a try (yea right like that would ever happen ).

anyway, i appreciate your skepticism

I have a Corbin with a back rest, which is MUCH better than the stock piece of butt-aching junk.

I just got an Alaska Leather Deluxe sheepskin seat cover and it real comfortable ($80?). I need to put some miles on to see the improvement it will give.

I have an Ultimate 4 piece and my friends have Mustangs. Both seats have good reputations for comfort, but we ALL have driver backrests!! That's the key if you want to keep your back from tightening up on the long rides!!

Here's the ergonomic perspective. If you slouch, the larger paraspinal muscles fatigue earlier forcing the smaller back proprioceptive muscles and the butt and pelvic muscles to work harder. Hence, ride discomfort starts sooner. While a better seat will help, the guys recommending a backrest win for best support. The backrest keeps you in a better position, supports the spine through accel/decel/cornering stresses and gives you a place to lean the back to periodically rest the muscles while riding.

As for the surgeon's perspective, while the Mustang may be ideal for him, every backside is a little different and what may fit him perfectly may not fit you st all. There is no one perfect seat. For less back fatigue, knees and hips should be bent at 90, elbows slightly bent, back, shoulders and head in an upright, relaxed posture. Think of your bike as a computer work station. The same principles apply. Try different seats, and keep in mind that whatever you ride will conform itself to your shape as you add thousands of miles.

Wasn't a quip, just a justified question.

I see such recommendations and "endorsements" every day in my line of work regarding rifle barrels. Someone posts up the question, "Who makes the best aftermarket barrel?" and everyone chimes in with their own personal preference (Shilen, Hart, Douglas, Kreiger, McGowen, Lilja, Obermeyer, etc.). Nine times out of ten though, if you ask those making the recommendations what other brands they have owned and why they find that brand to be the best, their answer will be "Well, that's the only brand I've ever owned and I've been real happy with them." In short, it comes down to the ego-driven misconception of "it's what I bought, so it must be the best."

So yeah, I am skeptical when it comes to any kind of recommendation and/or endorsement when no reasoning or comparative results are provided.
