Potential Wet Ride 2 Years, 6 Months ago
I'm taking off for the weekend and may run into some rain along the way. Typically I don't have to worry about the wet stuff as we get very little precipitation during the summer in our area. I have the Ultimate seats which are not waterproof and I do not have the waterproof covers. Will I run into any long-term problems with the seats if they get wet while riding? I don't expect to ride in a downpour, if anything, we may run into an occasional shower. Thoughts? Anything I should do to protect the seats while we are riding besides covering them up with our rear ends?

Thanks.

They should be at least a little water-resistant... You can also buy cheap waterproof bags from Walmart that could be modified to be a waterproof cover for the seat. A little rain shouldn't hurt it much, though.

That leather if it's leather will not be hurt much from rain. My Corbin seat has seen many a rain storm while riding and it has never hurt it. Also if you are worried I would take a simple trash bag along with you! if it starts to rain stretch the bag over the entire seat. This will help to keep it dry and when your out of the rain storm and you want to sit on your seat with just jeans you will not have a big old wet spot on your butt. Made that mistake before. It's amazing the things you learn to do after you have been through an experiance like a heavy rain storm.

I used "Snow Seal" (pure bee's wax) on mine to protect the stitching area's, and it's been sprayed with water a couple of times (neighbor pressure washing his house) and they wipe right up, nothing soaked in.

The big thing with Ultimate seats is they take the plastic out from under the leather (or vinyl) so the seat breaths better and doesn't get as hot on long rides. Any plastic bag or shower cap will cover the backrests and a small trash bag over the pillion seat should be enough.

I would just use a product like Aussie Wax, Fiebing's Snow Proof, or as stated above Sno-Seal. Just take a hairdryer and heat your seat up (not hot, just warm)they work better that way and apply with a cotton cloth. I assume your seat is black, but make sure you test on the underside to make sure there are no issues.

I almost think Ultimate says they are not water proof just to gank and extra $65 out of ya for the covers. Trust me I have Ultimate seats and I put water proofing and seam sealer on the stitches, I was the bike and just about fill the rider seat and It's never seeped into the foam.

So waterproof it, and bring some trash bags to fit over it if you park it in the rain. I think you will be fine.

Maybe they don't want you to like park it for weeks in the rain with the seats exposed, that would make more sense.

I agree, I ended up in a hell of a down pour on the way home from Oklahoma. I rode about 126 miles in the rain, some realy heavy some real light, did not have a trash bag on me (but should have) and I have not seen any problems with the seats what so ever. Rode another 650 miles after the rain in 90 degree temps and that dried them right out.

Appreciate the responses. We had a wonderful ride (855 miles since Thursday) which found us in all kinds of weather (sunny, fog, rain and cold--at least for summer--48 degrees). The trip took us over the Cascades, along the Columbia River, over to the Pacific Ocean, around Mount Hood, and home. I have to pinch myself sometimes to be sure we really live in such a wonder area. We are planning a week long trip in early September to Crater Lake National Park and Northern California, so think I will try sealing the stitching with Sno Seal before that trip. The rain we ran into this trip was pretty short duration and light, so didn't concern me. I have a hard time getting "soaked" by Ultimate for the kind of money they want for their waterproof covers.

Cheers.
