I'm really hoping to get a decent ride in before I have to go back to work - parts come wednesday, and then maybe on friday I'll be taking a ride down to the AC area. Shoot me a line if you wanna cruise around - I have 3 bikers down there I ride with normally, anyone's welcome!

My advice for what it's worth is to go to some bike nights, poker runs, etc. and just hang around and check out the different groups. You're going to want to ride with a group with similar likes and dislikes, hanging out gives you the opportunity to check out the various groups so you can see what may be a good fit. Same for the group, they're going to want to know you fit in with them as well. Take your time, you'll find what you're looking for eventually. There's nothing worse than joining a group and then finding out you really don't fit in.

My wife and I recently joined the Star Touring and Riding Association. This is a national riding club with chapters all over the country.

They are all about being safe. They are out every weekend.

a drinking club with a motorcycle problem
Same motto as Willie 'The Wino' Forkner and Boozefighters, they're a pretty cool bunch and AMA instead of 1%. Kinda ironic since Willie & co were among the original groups refered to as 1% outlaw or 'non-sanctioned' riding/racing clubs.
A very mello friend of mine and I were having a conversation with the VP of a Boozefighters MC chapter we met at an event and and the two of them came to an impass over the legality of smoking pot-vs-booze is legal, they stood there looking at each other for a few seconds until my friend asked, "So is there a Reeferfighters MC around?"
One of those moments that remembering makes me smile in the middle of something else.

I belong to the Patriot Guards, ABATE, Legion Riders, and Southern Cruisers. Southern Cruisers is the most active family riding group, more younger folks and women bikers, and the clubs are all over the country. SC does good charity work also.
Legion Riders tend to be an older group where I am (I'm youngest at 55)but I love what we represent. Check out the web to find out what's local and then check each group out at bikenights and local events. You'll find one that fits.

I've been a member of Southern Cruisers Riding Club for about six years. It is a mixed group of bikes and bikers. All brands and genders. They do some charity work and rides. Most weekends they ride somewhere and eat (some folks have said it is an eating club with a riding disorder). It is a world wide club, no fees, patches cost a modest amount. http://www.southerncruiser.net/
Like most here, I'd rather ride by myself but every once in a while I like the experience of twenty or so bikes thundering along with me.
SCRC has some decent road rules and guide lines which, for safety reasons, I appriciate.
