Trailer hitch? 2 Years, 3 Months ago
Ok, it's time for winter project reserch and cost ( how much
with so little) I'm going to put a hitch on the bike and
would like some advice on vendors and any do's and don'ts.
The wife and I love long weekends and I'm near the load
limit of the rear tire. (to MS1700 I'm not there yet but the
dark side is looking good). My set up will be my old sears
car top carrier and a modifed tractor supply trailer.

Another thing is you say your at your load limit for the tire but I have pulled my bunkhouse with the stock tire and never had any problems (400lbs or more). The weight is pulling not pushing down on the bike. Your tongue weight will be very light or at least it should be very light if you loaded properly.

I like that set-up. My load is just the wife and I, was
afraid to weigh the bike with luggage?

That will work but you really should have some side arms that go from the rear of the hitch up to where the passenger floor boards mount! Your depending stricly on the sub frame for full support of the trailer with that hitch. Maybe I'm over kill here but I prefer a bit more support since I have weight back there behind me pushing and pulling. Just a thought from my experiance of pulling trailers for a number of years.

Thanks Danny! Definitely appreciate advice from someone in the know. Primarily I wanted to reinforce the rear fender, hence this setup. Secondary was the hitch. Whether I'd pull a trailer is still undecided but just in case I'll be adding bracing from the rider pegs as you recommend. BTW, I got the idea from http://tinyurl.com/ybjvneh. Smurfdog26 fabricated it.

Danny, how thick are the sides, and the web site doesn't
say if the ball exstension is removable?
also does the ball have enough play for turns or does the
trailers reciever pivot?
