The sides of the hitch are made from 1/4" steel. It's very strong. As for removable No! You could remove the ball when not in use but otherwise it stays in place.
As for pivot, you will hear pros & cons on the subject but I installed a 360 degree pivot on the front of the trailer.

To me the swivel hitch makes a huge difference in how a trailer pulls. It will keep the trailer flat as the bike leans into the turns. Also when you park your bike over on the kickstand the trailer doesn't effect the bike with the swivel hitch.Yes a regular ball is made to swivel but to me it's not enough, After installing the swivel on my trailer I could tell a major difference. Again you will hear people say cons about the swivel so it's all up to you. I have been pulling a trailer now for 10 years and logged alot of miles so I do have some real life experiance with what I'm talking about.
