You don't realize how much clutter that AIS is until you take it off. But after you do you look at that pile of stuff that's laying on the floor and you realize all that junk was hanging on the bike for no real reason. Then you look at the bike and smile.

It pumps air into the exhaust to help the gases burn more completely. Which in my opinion was only needed because they insist on jetting the bikes to rich. How much good it actually does is up for grabs as far as I know.

THe AIS pumps extra air in, and that I guess you could say, would cause a lean condition....therefore causing the popping and backfiring out the pipes. .

Not exactly... the air is pumped into the exhaust ports and therefore has no effect on air fuel mixture. but acts like a lean condition

The unburned gases are ignited with the extra air pumped in and burned in the exhaust in mini explosions outside the combustion chamber

A "lean condition" is caused by carb settings/ manfold intake leak or clogged jets ...does effect performance

If the mixture is too lean, it may burn very slowly and unevenly. This condition, in turn, may result in burning mixture remaining in the cylinder until the beginning of the next intake stroke when it can ignite the incoming air/fuel mixture.
This type of backfiring occurs in the combustion chamber

Soooooooooooooo... the AIS(Air Injection System) has no effect on performance and is there to act as a pollution control device like a catalytic converter to please the EPA and annoy us who like the looks of an clean uncluttered V-twin that doesnt sound like fireworks on the 4th of July

Post edited by: Pop Rivet, at: 2007/02/03 01:21

Take it off whenever you want... has no effect on break in whatsoever

It's the easiest 15 bucks you can spend, when it comes to cleaning up that front end. Throw it in a box and forget about it , then you have it if it is ever needed again. BB
