Project for Dad 2 Years, 6 Months ago
I am currently working on a project for my father in law (dad)... I already have some of what I need, but I want to put a Road Star front end on this frame to accomplish what I would like to do... I already have the upper triple tree, the lower triple tree, lower fork legs and risers...

I am need of the upper(inner) forks tube assemblies for both sides... If anyone has some laying around, shoot me a price... we are building this thing on a budget and I would like to get it finished before spring, so he can ride with us on our trips next year...

I am also in need of a Road Star front wheel, both calipers, both rotors and a front wheel shaft. If you have any of these parts hanging around taking up space, let me know... please remember, we are building this on a very tight budget... I am not asking for free, but almost, LOL!!

here are a couple of pix...

Tony have you considered just running a single disk up front? If so I have the right side caliper & rotor. I'm assuming that you will have rear brakes on that trike? So a single will be more then enough. Also I'm looking at your pictures and I'm a little concerned with the front end not having the proper trail. Have you had a chance to just roll that thing down the road to see how it handles?

With my father in law driving the trike, I am really kinda wanting to go with the dual disks up front... I want to make sure that he will have plenty of braking power no matter which ones he hits... he has never riden a bike before, so this is a first for him... And I will be the one teaching him how to ride a trike and work the motorcycle contols... I just want as much built in security as possible... I am updating the VW drum brakes to disk as well with e-brake...

On the trail... nope, I have not ran it down the road yet... I dont even have breaks set up for testing it... and there are no flat or lightly sloaped roads here... very mountainy and curvy! LOL!! I do need to somehow try it out before I go any further and do something like paint the frame though... got any suggestions?

I would get the brakes in the rear working first. I understand what your saying about safety but I can tell you that 1 caliper will still give you excellent stopping. A lot of the bike manufactures started putting dual disks so that when you pull that front brake it would not pull to the side of the caliper. But again it's your choice I was just offering you up what I had.

Now as for the trike itself. Once you get the rear brakes working I would take it out on the road. You say you have hills? with you on it let it roll down a hill you don't need a lot of speed to test how that front end is going to feel. If you get a wobble in the trike which you will feel at slower speeds you will need to rake those trees and extend your forks.

Thanks for the input... I do know that the Road Star front forks have more rake in the trees than the GL1100 trees... as soon as I get the Road Star front end mounted on the trike and get the rear brakes set up to work, then I will pull it to the top of the hill here at the house and see how she does... I do know the previous owner of the frame has already tweaked the neck to rake it a tad bit... I will let you know how it turns out... I still need to get the forks and stuff first though... I just remembered, there is a fella on the RSR forum that has a set of forks with one of the caliper mounts shaved off for $150... I will check with him to see if he still has them... I think I may take you up on the caliper and rotor depending on which side he shaved...

Thanks for your help!
