Lookin for a driver's back rest 2 Years, 5 Months ago
Hey Guys,
I'm looking for a driver's backrest. I already own the Mustang seat with the backrest but that hasn't worked out too well. The backrest is too low & the seam across the Mustang seat gets uncomfortable after a couple of hours. So I've gone back to the stock seat.
I've found that hanging a cushion on the side of the duffle that I carry across the passenger seat gives me about the right height. But I only use the duffle for long trips. Not short, or weekend runs. I'd like to find a removable backrest that sits up 3-5 inches higher. I remember a couple of years ago someone was selling a passenger bag that had a frame inside just for this purpose but I can't find it now. Any suggestions?

I believe there are directions in the tech articles on how to make your own, that way you can adjust it to the right position for you. I think Beanmachine made his own, and looks pretty good.

Yeah. I saw that. But it looks like the same steel leaf type that is on the Mustang. A little too flexible. Particularly when fully extended. Ya get a single piece of steel that long. It acts more like a spring than a bar. I'm really looking for something a bit more rigid. As I'm 6" tall with a longer than usual body (& shorter legs), it's often difficult to find a good fit.

I've almost decided that I'll have to go with one of the ugly factory backrest if I can find one. The ones that have the bracket that mounts to the sides of the fender. All the aftermarket ones that I find look flimsy and they mount under the passenger seat bracket which wont work with my plan for a solo bike. Especially with me being as bigga boy as I am!

I have a Utopia and highly recommend them. Very sturdy and adjustable. Folds down for the passenger getting off the bike. However, it is NOT easily removable.

Build your own as it's quite easy. I did the write up and the bar I used is solid. I'm 6'3" and it gives great support without pushing you forward.

I made my own . I used the tech article that 2ringstar wrote but made a slight modification to make it removeable. He seen it and I got a thumbs up. I might be selling it if I cant use it with a mustang seat. I should know in a couple days.

Tramp116, Custom World International (CWI) makes a pretty good drivers backrest. I had one on an 06 Midnight, was a bit higher on my back than the Ultimate seat backrest that I currently have. Folds forward. It mounts on the rear fender saddle bag mounts. Cheers.

Dave,
If Tramp116 passes, let me know I'm about to buy the materials to make my own and mount the pad I bought. Yours might work.

Dave used what I came up with and went a step further and made it so it comes off much easier. What I like about this place modifications always evolve to make a job or design easier and better.
