Went from Las Vegas, NM to Killeen, TX in 11 hours. Great ride, it was 105 degrees when we went through Abline, TX. Doing it again this year.

always thought i wanted to do one. but I logged several 500 mile days back to back last summer. I would have a hard time doing 1000 in 24 hours. I was tired at the end of the second day. That is probably beyond my endurance level.

Re:IronButt 2 Years, 2 Months ago
I started to do one with 5 guys and 2 gals but ran into issues. Issue 1, was 32deg's when we left (20deg's below our norms) and planned to head north so, got into colder temps, Brrrrrr!! Issue 2, we planned for only 10min stops, 1st stop turned into a fiasco, mostly for the gals, since they had to shed everything to go pee, so that turned into a 45min stop. I think even with normal temps, 7 riders is too many. 100 miles into it, lost the 1st guy, a 150 miles into they lost me, my toes were too painful, I'm diabetic, so poor circulation, plain and simple, my health comes first, and I still needed to do 150 miles back home. Due to cold, they had to change route, I met them later on for a half-way stop, they looked ragged from the cold. 3/4 way into it, they lost the gals, 1 just couldn't go on, and the other didn't want to leave her friend by herself. The final 3 did make it, took 23.5hrs, just under the wire. Other than that, my longest hall was about 750miles in 14hrs, so I know a 1k can be done in 20hrs

Erbman02, I have a friend that does the Bun Burner ( 1500 in 34 hours ) and Bun Burner Gold ( 1500 in 24 hours ). He says that its actually better if you go by yourself... I went with a group of 5 and unless you plan on your gas stops at 10 minutes...it can turn into a reall fiasco.

On long trips I do prefer to be alone, unless I'm w/ like-minded riders. Alot of people I've ridden with can't go through a full tank without stopping; they will usually want to stop after I've just gotten settled in to the saddle and comfortable! On the IronButt run I went on it was dark, raining hard & cold for about the first 3 hours & I considered turning back, but by the time I got to Little Rock the weather cleared up & I felt better. The whole way down I kept singing Johnny Cash & Willie Nelson songs outloud to myself & was looking forward to the Fat Daddy's burger I was going to have for lunch in Garland, TX. The Concours is a pretty comfortable bike; I didn't really get sore until after about 17 hours & the only part of me that was really sore then was the muscle between my shoulderblades. If I were on my Shadow, I'd have never made it! I'll bet the Roadie will be better than the Concours on an IronButt trip (as long as I have earplugs!).

Re:IronButt 2 Years, 2 Months ago
I didn't plan ahead on this one occasion, and ended up having to ride about 65 miles round trip on my old rigid chopper to the VA and back .. 3 days after several samples were taken during my liver biopsy .. none of my long runs on that or any other bike have compared to that, for what I percieved as an accomplishment of physical/mental endurance and tenacity.

I don't want a patch or a pin for places I have been and trips I have taken, as long as I have the pictures and the memories, I don't really give a damn if someone else is impressed with the fun I had. And I damn sure don't want fun for the sake of fun to be turned into some symbol of 'egotistical accomplishment' .. People that haven't been riding for the pleasure of riding for 30 some years just don't seem to understand that the whole patch and pin thing is the antithesis of 'Ride to Live - Live to Ride'.

My 1999 Road Star(Geezer Glide) had 76,000 miles on it when I bought it, the previous owner had been across the arctic circle a couple times and rode the Pacific Coast Highway up into Alaska, etc .. and the only thing he pointed out to me was what a wonderful motorcycle it had been. The only way I knew about the trips was in extended conversation regarding a dent from hitting a Caribou and chatting about having been to several of the same places. He was a true rider in the spirit of this insanity where we piss away so much of our lives sitting up in a vibrating saddle, holding a pair of handlebars and grinning to shit.

Enjoy yourself, and when the chance strikes, enjoy someone else along the way.

I certainly learned a few things, don't plan a month in advance, weather can change on ya, we never had a cold front like that so early in the season down here, caught us all off guard. Either I go myself or no more than a total of 3, and they either keep up with me, or I leave them in the dust.
