You have to be really careful with those Hondas. They will only last 2-3 lifetimes. The 400 is a really easy to ride bike for a starting rider.

+ 1 ... great choice. IMHO, the VT750 would be worth looking at also... nice and low, lightweight and fairly sedate; and a v-twin to boot.

We found my wife an older (1986) Kawasaki ZL600. This is a 4 cylinder standard bike similar to the Honda in the OP. Paid about the same, although I can't recall the mileage, I think hers was a little higher. She loves it and it's been a really good trainer, easy to handle.
...Although lately she's been wanting to get something that she can stretch out on a little. The standards don't generally seem to have a good riding position for really long rides, or maybe it's just 'cause I'm used to the R*!!!

I would tell you to think hard about how much she would ride. We talking a lady that has been itching for years to get her own bike.....or one that is testing the waters? If she is serious about riding.....that bike will be a disappointment after the novelty wears off. If it will be an occasional ride here and there.....then it might fit the bill.
My wife jumped in with both feet 7 years ago. She has clocked 85,000 miles since becoming a rider. She is 5-10 and about a buck 35. She rides a Honda Magna 750 (last Gen)and loves it. For her it was nothing smaller than a 750 , as the power to get in Atlanta traffic requires it. Plenty of good 650-800cc bikes on the market for fair $. Just don't buy something that you might regret later if you haven't weighed your options. 2 cents. BB

Thanks to all! To BB....she is 100% just testing the waters, and thought about this as a first try. Worst case scenario...she loves it, graduates to a bigger, more comfortable bike, and we send the starter up to college with my son for cheap/easy transportation.
As always, this place, and the people here are the BEST!!

+1, vstar650's are great bikes for beginner or experienced and you can pick them up for a decent price. Viragos are pretty good too but more for shorter people.

+1 for Big Bear. If she's always struggling to keep up with you and has a fight at highway speeds she might get a bad taste in her mouth
