So when you shift into neutral the gauges go out? When you shift to first or second from neutral the gauges go on?

Or each time you shift the gauges go off momentarily?

Make any changes recently?

Sounds like a short in the neutral circuit.

Pull out the service manual and your trusty meter, and start testing.

If you put on a chrome neutral switch cover that's one place to check but a short there has a different effect - a neutral light that stays on.

A blown fuse means you have a short somewhere.

The speedo was working off and off 'cause it getting current from somewhere else. It probably has something to do with the gas gauge wire if the gauge still doesn't work.

Have a safe ride.
