Riding in Thailand has risk -- not so much because of drivers who don't see you because there are so many bikes on the road, it's impossible not to be be aware of them. Most of the accidents come from just not paying attention and doing stupid stuff.
Today, I'm riding through the center of the city to go meet a friend. There is no traffic ahead of me or behind me, which is extremely rare for 1:00 pm in the afternoon.
As I'm nearing a traffic circle, a lone scooter, with no one ahead or behind him, starts to turn across my lane while at the same time the rider is looking over his outside shoulder AWAY from the direction he is turning.
Couldn't avoid him. He crossed into my lane, and his front wheel clipped the right crash bar, the right foot pad and my right calf. Before I knew it, he and his bike and all of what he was carrying was a tangled mess in the middle of my lane and behind me. He's lucky there was no traffic behind me, or he would have been hit. Because he wasn't looking, he probably doesn't even know how he ended up in the middle of my lane.
I was much more fortunate than the guy who hit me. Neither the R* nor I had a scratch.

Thanks, Tug.
Yeah, talk about your head needs to be on a constant swivel. I don't even use my highway cruise pegs when on the highway. Never know when something or someone is going to pop up in front of you.
And as for "getting away with it", some don't -- like the guy today.
I do notice that Thais ride slower on their motorcycles -- unless it's some young kid on a ninja style bike. Slower gives them time to react and to avoid a mess.

Glad you're OK. I was amazed by the sheer number of scooters and tuk-tuks everywhere there. Sometimes 4 across each lane, with up to 4 people on each scooter. And a baby riding on the tank! My daughter rode a scooter there for a year with only one accident- she was riding along on one of the islands, ogling the water and not paying attention. The road ended and she went nose-down in the sand. (I'm sure alcohol was a factor, too) She was lucky.

Yeah, John. Agree.
I often describe every red light intersection as a motorcross starting line. However many bikes can fit across is how many there are -- and sometimes some encroaching on the adjacent lane of oncoming traffic. I make it a point to get ahead of all of them or behind them. Never in the middle of the pack.
The pedaling samlaws are the worst for in-town traffic and the tuktuks you referred to are second on my "hit" list. Both are being phased out through attrition. Not many youngsters doing either. As the owners die, their traditional transportation mode is dying with them.

Was there even a thud or a thunk or poof? Did you have to stop? I watched a lot of videos on youtube, just after you joined, that showed what you have to ride through. I could not do it...
Glad you are OK.
